Tax Evasion and Productivity

- Corporate tax evasion through cost overreporting is a widespread and significant problem for developing and developed countries. Detecting and measuring this type —or any type— of tax evasion remains a challenge, however, even for governments with detailed administrative data. Moreover, if cost overreporting is so large and widespread, our firm-level productivity estimates are likely biased. I provide a new estimation strategy to recover cost overreporting using commonly available data like manufacturing surveys. Then, I show that ignoring cost overreporting leads to downward biased productivity estimates. Finally, I show how to recover productivity in the presence of tax evasion.
Cournot Rationalizability and Measurement Error

- This paper introduces measurement error to the Revealed Preference test of the Cournot Model. In contrast to the standard approach, the Revealed Preference analysis relies only on shape restrictions, i.e., the convexity of the firm’s cost function, but otherwise, no parametric assumptions are needed. In the application for the international market of crude oil, measurement errors might arise in the production quantities data due to the consolidation of information or coordination mistakes. Once measurement error is incorporated, the method requires a centering condition. Here, I assume that the quantity mismeasurement is uncorrelated with prices. In contrast to the deterministic version of the test, the Cournot model hypothesis can no longer be rejected.

Industry Experience
Before getting into the Ph.D. program I worked in the manufacturing industry in strategic sourcing and project management areas. I developed skills that are relevant to thrive under high stakes and time-constraint environments such as time management, setting priorities right, communication skills, work under pressure, coordination of multidisciplinary teams, negotiation skills, among others.
