THE GREATEST care should be taken in what we eat and drink, yet we are too often indifferent and careless, notwithstanding health depends on what we eat and drink.
In regard to drink nothing but the best should be taken. It costs no more than the indifferent quality, if people would only ask for what they know is the best Old Scotch Whisky is the most wholesome beverage yet known Mackie's Scotch Whisky gives an undoubted guarantee to those who are not judges of quality.

I hereby certify that I have taken samples of every vatting of Mackie's White Horse Celler Blend of Scotch Whisky used
in bottling during the month of September, and the results of my analyses
indicate that it conforms to the standard for Pot Still Scotch Whisky set up
in the London case. I am also of opinion that it is an old Whisky of
excellent quality and flavour, which has been well matured in wood.

Situated in the midst of the Mediterranean, swept by all the winds of heaven,
and enjoy. ing brilliant sunshine for several months in the year, the island
of Malta should be one of the healthiest of places. Its freedom from swamps
or standing water of any kind protects the island from that scourge of warm
climates-- malaria. For many years past, however, Malta has suffered from
the prevalence of a serious local fever, of a most persistent character,
which has been the bane of the island, and particularly of the garrison ;
for a large fraction of the naval and military forces have been constantly
incapacitated by this disease. Every
This fever appears to be widely distributed in the world, but is most familiar to us in its incidence around the coasts of the Mediterranean. On the island of Malta it has worked its worst ravages, and hence the name of Malta fever, by which it is best known. Now, however, all this has been changed by a simple application of the discoveries of science, and widespread gratification will be given by the intelligence, furnished in recently published Reports, that since June, 1906, when the new preventive measures were put into practice, Malta fever may be said to have prac. tically disappeared from the garrison of the Island Fortress. What are these preventive measures, and how has this result been achieved ? The serious ravages of Malta fever made it desirable that a searching investigation should be taken in hand. In 1904, the Royal Society, at the request of the Admiralty, the War Office and the Colonial Office, under took to investigate the causes of this fever, and sent out a small Commission to Malta for that purpose. This Commission, which consisted chiefly of Army and Naval medical officers, has been at work for three years, under the supervision of a Committee of the Royal Society, and has only lately completed its labours. It is unnecessary to describe the details of the three years' work; it is enough to say that every likely line of research was followed, in order to discover how man becomes infected by this disease. As long ago as 1887 an Army medical officer had discovered that Malta fever is caused by the entrance into the body of a minute bacterium, which was named the Micrococcus melitensis. This microbe was studied from many points of view, but with no success until a discovery was made which cleared up the mystery. This was the remarkable fact that the goats in Malta are susceptible to this disease, and act, às it were, as a reservoir of the virus. In truth; it is probable that Malta fever is primarily a disease of goats, and that man is infected from the goat, not the goat from man. The goat is very much in evidence in Malta, there being some 20,000 of them, which supply practically all the milk used in the island. It was discovered by the Commission that half of these animals are affected by Malta fever, and that one-tenth are constantly passing the Micrococcus melitensis in their milk. Notwithstanding that the goats show no outer signs of the disease, they continue, possibly for years, to secrete milk containing the poison. It seemed evident then, that to banish Malta fever from our sailors and soldiers on the station, all that was required was to eliminate goats' milk from their dietary. This step was taken in June, 1906, with the striking result that the cases of fever fell to one tenth of what had been their normal number. There is, therefore, reasonable hope that this disease will now disappear from the garrison in Malta, and some 80,000 days of illness be blotted out from the yearly records of the Navy and Army. If these good results are maintained this investigation will stand out as one of the most notable examples of successful work in the prevention of disease, and will clearly show the economy of spending a few thousands on a thorough scientific investigation. The research occupied some time, and from first to last employed some twelve men, but the outlay in time and money are as nothing to the result achieved.

Yesterday morning about two o'clock, a fire broke out on board an Ottoman brig moored in Alexandria harbour, and after a couple of hours, hard work was extinguished by the Coastguards Administration, under the command of Captain Borg. It was found that nobody was on-board in charge of the vessel, and the fire was only discovered by the observation of the signaller at Fort Napoleon. The damage is not great.
In Egypt the education question is very complicated-nevertheless, as regards modern languages, at the Berlitz Schools (Cairo, 1 Sharia Kamel ; Alexandria, 12 rue Rosette) the number of pupils continue to increase, because the Berlitz Method is the most logical and the most practical way of learning languages. A Summer Branch has just been opened at Bulkeley, Carlton Hotel. (Advt).

Speaking on behalf of the British Cotton Growing Association at the International Cotton Congress, held at Vienna last week, Mr. Henry Higson pointed out that, notwithstanding the fact that the cotton crop of the United States in 1906 was one of the largest yet grown, the scarcity of good cotton was greater than ever, and cotton of good spinning quality was to-day fetching exceptionally high prices. There was, therefore, every necessity for pushing on the development of new cotton fields, and more especially of those which could produce cotton better than middling American.

GLADSTONE'S ATTITUDE AND BLUNT'S
INTERVENTIONS.
( Gazetto's Special Service. )
London, Tuesday The "Daily Chronicle" publishes an advance review of Mr. Wilfred Blunt's book on the "Secret History of the British Occupation of Egypt". "It appears to contain nothing startling and is in the main confined to accounts of Mr. Blunt's own interventions, and Gladstone's attitude towards Egypt from 1882 to 1884. He describes the way in which Gladstone was torn between his passion for freedom and instinct for order. Mr. Blunt argues that the Arabs were patriots without guide, though lacking in vigour and initiative. From the review in question I would consider that the book is as feeble as Mr. Blunt's last notorious pamphlet.

On the occasion of the opening of their new hall, Messrs. Lifonti gave last night an inauguration concert and they must be warmly congratulated on their signal success. The hall, which can accomodate a large number of people, was packed, there being hardly room enough for the fashionable audience on this particular occasion. The programme was made specially attractive to amateurs of good music and the performers were excellent. The brunt of the work fell on Mr. Arrigo Serato, the violinist, who deserves great praise for his correctness of execution. His technique was faultless and his playing right through, but more especially in Beethoven's Concerto, certainly places him in the front rank of his profession; let us hope we shall have many more occasions of hearing him. The conductors, Messrs Bracale and De Marzi are worthy of a very special mention for their most able interpretation of the orchestral part of the programme; we must not forget the members of the orchestra who individually did all they could to secure a good effect. Signora Caporale delighted her audience on the harp; whether she plays the latter instrument or the organ, she invariably charms. She was also associated with Signora Vella in a cappricio for two harp. Signora Yuppa Venditti presided with commendable good-will at the piano and although her performance showed conscientiousness and regularity of execution throughout, her work cannot, as yet, be put on the same level as that one of her associates of the evening
Among those attending the concert were Sir Eldon and Lady Gorst, the Governor, Lady Blomfield, the Persian Consul, the French Consul, and Mr. and Mrs. D. Beneducci.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "EGYPTIAN GAZETTE."
Sir. Time is being lost, people are leaving, enthusiasm is evaporating, and the only proposition is for a tuberculose asile, which is not to cure. Natives are invited to come in to die, so that they may not contaminate healthy people, and they will refuse. If they did they would become homesick and leave, and relations who ever allowed them to go would be disgraced.
Better help to raise healthy children than prolong the days of sickly and feeble folk. The tuberculose asile does not appeal to the public and will not be supported by natives. The keynote of Cromer administration was "help the Egyptian." Every father wishes a son, and women who do not produce and rear one lose status. How can a diminution be best
achieved of the terrible infant mortality which is due to ignorant mothers
European mothers are often taught by nurses and the maternal instinct developed. Human nature is the same everywhere, and the maternal nature is strong in the native, and enforced by the husband's desire for a son will aid, in this matter of child rearing in a way that will astonish those who think natives allow an innovation.
The object is to reduce the terrible infant mortality. The means is to train competent nurses and ultimately every Markaz town in Egypt will have its childrens dispensary supported entirely by natives. How are nurses to be trained! A maternity home is needed, and a children's dispensary and hospital. These three are necessary adjuncts of a nurses training horne, which is the main object of the scheme.
The ultimate care of children rests with the mother, and a little guidance and instruction principally in cleanliness and diet will at once make a marked diminution in the terrible holocaust of infant mortality. That the mothers will respond is shown by the results obtained in the childrens dispensaries instituted by Lady Cromer in Cairo. The Egyptian father will see to results being obtained. Anyone who knows him can appreciate bis solicitude for his childrens health and life, and he will be stern enough with the careless mother if he knows her treatment of his child is wrong.
There is no scheme which can be devised which will appeal more to native high and low, and be more warmly supported by Lord and Lady Cromer, than one which will reduce infant mortality and help to give to each Mohamedan father, the desire of his heart, a son.
It is useless to fritter away more time: already the General Committee convened by the Municipality failed to appear in numbers sufficient to form a meeting on 30th. That speaks volumes against the Tuberculose Asile. I propose immediate action, and ask you to open your columns to correspondents. If the press, European and Native, will do the same one may soon see every newspaper in Egypt with a substantial list of subscribers and when nurses become available in every Markaz town, a child dispensary affiliated to our Alexandria central institution and supported by local subscribers. The philanthropy of the native has only to be tapped in a matter so dear to his heart. There is the example of the large sum being raised to relieve the houseless sufferers from the fire at Matarieh. It will bring European and Native to work hand in hand and show they have mutual interest and trust. True friends working together for the country's good will be a useful contrast to would-be political agitators and timid prophets of fanatical dangers.
Yours truly,
Sir,--Since last season's correspondence in your columns on the so-called
"morality crusade" I have been convinced that Alexandria society has
adopted "mock morality" as its motto, and the letters of "Paterfamilias"
and "An Irate Husband" only strengthen such a conviction. Being a
worldly person I am able to distinguish the undesirable women," and to
say that they are chiefly music-hall artistes. I should like to ask
"Paterfamilias" if he would require a race committee in England or
France to prohibit entrance to 'artistes and actresses, and I would ask
him to whom he would allot the task of stopping such persons at the gate
and refusing them admittance, on the grounds of public objection to
their presence. Such people as "Paterfamilias" and "An Irate Husband" do
far more mischief by their prudishness than the persons whom they call
to book, I might also remark that I have noticed that the society ladies
who attend the races pay far more attention to the costumes of the
"indescribable women" than any one else. Being a constant race-goer. I
am able to say that the "undesirable women" conduct themselves with most
perfect propriety, though it is doubtless the fact that they go there
(as, I am afraid society ladies do) to "show themselves off," but their
object in "showing themselves off" is of no interest to those who do not
care to take an interest in them. If the members object to such persons
let them form a members' enclosure and exclude therefrom all who have to
pay éntrance. The race-course is made public, and unless the public
generally is excluded, the
Yours truly,
To the EDITOR OF THE "EGYPTIAN GAZETTE."
Sir,-"Don Juan" unless he belies his nom de plume, should prove a better discriminator than "Paterfamilias" in dividing the black sheep from the white. The proper place for the "undesirables," if they must needs go to races, is a separate pen. There is such a thing as a member's enclosure, and introduction to that is at the risk of the member who introduces. Birds of a feather flock together, and "Don Juan" may still entertain his friends--but elsewhere.-
Yours truly,
An unfortunate accident occurred yesterday in the construction of the new Victoria College, the central tower giving way and to a large extent falling down. We are glad, however, to say that no other damage has been done to the new buildings, even the central hall to which the tower was annexed being altogether untouched.
It is impossible at the moment to know to what cause to attribute the accident, but the college authorities are making a through investigation.
The house and grounds of the late Count Zizinia at San Stefano, which were lately sold for £130,000, are, it is stated, intended for a casino and hotel. The property consists of about 64,000 square pics and the purchasers and promoters of the concern are said to be an English group in conjunction with a local one. The new building, which will be a very sumptuous one and cost over £100,000, is to be commenced at the end of the year.
Prof. C. S. Myers contributes to the Journal of the Anthropological Society his observations on Egyptian anthropology (made under the auspices of the British Association and the Government Grants Committee of the Royal Society), so far as regards the anthropometry of the modern Mohammedans, and the comparison of the Mohammedans with the Copts and with the mixed populations. His complete list of measurements is 44, of which he made about 16 on each individual, and thus obtained altogether about 19,000 data, in addition to the non-numerical characters above referred to In the tables of results he gives not only the summary of the actual observations, but also the calculated probable error, plus or minus, the standard deviation, and the coefficient of variability according to the mathematical formula. The paper is illustrated by 38 diagrams of curves of distribution.

According to advices from the Yemen, there is no improvement in the situation. The Turks, are reported to have destroyed about thirteen villages in Humdan District, belonging to Arabs, who are in communication with the rebels. The mission arrived at Sana, and it is reported that they have made a tour through the outlying districts and returned to Sana. They are now proceeding to Al Kuflah, two days journey from Sana, where the conference will meet. On their way to Sana the mission stopped at several places and conferred with the local Sheikhs.
The Turks are reported to have had a sharp engagement with the rebels at Al Orr in Al Haima district, lasting from morning till evening. Both sides are reported to have suffered heavily. The rebels are making preparations to again attack Tawaila from which they were lately dislodged. The Turks are reported to have captured a number of rebel sheikhs in Al Haima, and imprisoned them at Manakha-Hodeida ronte.
It is officially announced at Sana that it has been included in the programme of the Commission to enquire into the present state of affairs in the Yemen, and ascertain the grievances of the chiefs of the rebels, and ask their views as to the necessary reforms to be introduced into the present administration of the Yemen.

A delightful entertainment was given at the Papadopoullos Theatre, Nicosia, in aid of funds towards a Consumptive Hospital. A most excellent and varied programme had been arranged consisting of songs, tableaux, piano and violin solos, a minuet dance, and ending with a nigger chorus.
Certain members of the Cyprus Amateur Dramatic Society kindly gave their services for the tableaux, which had been prepared with great artistic judgment and cate, and met with a most hearty and well-deserved reception.
The first set depicted the return of Ulysses from Troy. The first scene showed him bound to the vessel's mast with his crew engaged in propelling the boat onwards towards the rocky coast to which the nymphs were luring them. The attitude of Ulysses was dramatic and effective and the rowers seemed to have been suddenly arrested in their measured swing. Scene 2 introduced us to the nymphs at play. They were very prettily and cleverly grouped. Nausicaa and another nymph were evidently in the act, the one of throwing, the other of receiving a ball, when their action was interrupted and they remained, as it seemed, spell bound while the raised curtain revealed them to the view of the delighted spectators. Other nymphs were in expectant attitudes, evidently participants also in the game. Scene 3 was the interior of Ulysses' home. He returned after twenty years' absence to find the house filled with suitors for the hand of his wife Penelope, who, however, remained true to him though uncertain whether or not he still lived. With his mighty bow he puts the suitors to death, and in the last scene we find him reunited to Penelope, and a new figure was here introduced in the person of Eumaues. the old swineherd, by whom, on his return, his master Ulysses was first recognized. The boat and several other scenic properties were specially made by a member of the Dramatic Society, and contributed in no small degree to the effective mise-en-scene.
The second series of tableaux were from the well-known story of Pygmalion and Galatea. Besides Galatea were the statues of Diana, Mercury, and the Muse of Music, holding a scroll of music. Scene 1 discovers Pygmalion in his studio at work on his immortal statue. Scene 2 finds him supplicating Venus, at her shrine, to endow his statue of Galatea with life In Scene 3 she has come to life; in Scene 4 the statue has descended from its pedestal and Pygtnalion returning and finding it empty and the statue apparently gone, has sunk down in grief. Scene 5 Galatea reveals herself to him as a living being and his cup of joy is full.
The statues throughout were excellent in pose and in marble-like appearance. The draping was correct and artistic and the whole effect was realistic. The second of this latter series of tableaux required an entire change of scene, which, all things considered, was accomplished with very little delay. The shrine was well suggested by a mass of foliage and archway of greenery and flowers flanked by pedestal sconces with burning incense. The priestesses and maidens were cleverly grouped and fitted well into the picture.
Those responsible for the entertainment are to be congratulated upon this high-class and and pleasing performance, which, it is to be regretted, was not so well attended as might have been. His Excellency the Commissioner was unfortunately unable to be present but Lady King Harman (under whose patronage it was given) and Miss Biddulph were both at the theatre and remained almost to the end.
A stupid difference arose at Limassol on the 'occasion of the Greek Easter, in consequence of
the action of the local police in prohibiting the firing of guns at this religious festival. Some feeling seems to have been aroused which led to a mild demonstration.
A severe hailstorm broke over Nicosia on Sunday 19th instant. The hailstones were of great size and among other damage done, the crops at the Government Farm at Athalassa are reported to have suffered rather severely.
Empire Day was duly recognized here as an official holiday. A grillingly hot day it was, and not much effort was made to observe the occasion other than in a quiet restful manner according to the inclinations of the holidaymakers.
The case is now procceeding against the Post Office officials incriminated in the recent defalcations. It naturally rouses much interest; especially among the native community, as the accused, although not Greek Cypriots, nevertheless belong to well known and respected families.
We have already announced in these columns the sale of the Standard Life Buildings in the Rond Point Soliman Pasha at Cairo, to Mr. E. Zervudachi of Alexandrie, and how we learn that the acte de vente was signed on Thursday by the two parties to the sale. The purchase price was L.E. 144,000 and the total areas of the property is 2,450 square metres. The offices now occupied by the above company on the ground floor will probably be vacated in January when the premises will be considerably enlarged by adding the two adjoining apartments. These are to be let to a newly formed bank at a rental of £2,000 a year.
PROSPECTING CO.

House of Commons. Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman admitted that the Government was hackward in keeping its promises owing to pressure in certain departments. He hoped to pass the English Small Holdings and Territorial Bills this session. The Passive Resisters Bill will be dropped but comprehensive education and licensing Bills will be introduced next session. The Irish Council Bill will be dropped in view of the unanimous decision of the Convention. He expressed regret that Irishmen misunderstood the bill and had not considered it more carefully. The introduction of an Irish University Bill is impracticable, but a bill dealing with compulsory purchase with a view to restoring evicted tenants will be introduced. A resolution with reference to the Lords will be moved in June when the Government will state its views.

The committee of inscrits maritimes has visited M. Thompson, who remains intransigent for budgetary reasons on the retirement taxes. He added that the shipping commission would study favourable measures, but the strikers must put an end to the agitations, which compromise the interests of the country. At the conclusion of the visit the committee telegraphed to the ports to resume work.

The Minister of Marine replied to a deputation of seamen that the concessions demanded would be considered and that no disciplinary measures would be taken if the strikes were ended immediately. The seamen's committee afterwards declared the strike to be at an end.

The recent intelligence from Malta to the effect that the scourge known as "Mediterranean fever" had been traced to the milk supply at Malta and elsewhere, has raised the keenest interest in naval medical circles. The report still wants official confirmation, and that is awaited. If that be the source of the scourge the remedy is very simple. This fever commits frightful ravages amongst our land and sea forces in the Mediterranean and exacts a heavy toll of deaths and invalids annually. There have been times when some of the ships could scarcely put to sea owing to its ravages.
It is understood that Major A. L. Schrieber, D.S.O., Royal Engineers, will leave Chatham for Egypt in the autumn. Major Schrieber, who has been a sapper for nearly 23 years, won his D.S.O., in the South African War, but long before that he had smelt powder in the North West Frontier Expedition, 1897-98, when he accompanied the Tochi Force as Field Engineer (medal with clasps): In the South African War he was slightly wounded in action and had a long turn of it on the way to Pretoria, seeing a good deal of service in the action which marked the British advance under Lord Roberts -- the passage of the Vet and the Zand, the actions near Johannesburg and Pretoria, the occupation of the latter place and the battle of Diamond Hill; and the succeeding operations carried out in the Transvaal, Cape Colony and Orange River (mentioned in despatches, D.S.O., Queen's medal with five clasps, King's medal with two clasps).
Lieutenant H. E. Dumbell, Royal Fusiliers, presently doing duty with the Khedive's Army as an Assistant Inspector at Kassala, has been promoted Captain in his own regiment, in which he bore a commission since February, 1899. He took service with the Egyptian Army in February, 1904, and on promotion will remain with it.
Another local promotion is that of Lieutenant E. P. Blencowe, Army Service Corps, also attached to the Egyptian Army for duty with the Supplies Department. Captain Blencowe gets the triple stars at a little over seven years' service. His first commission was in the Hampshire Regiment from which he transferred in 1902. He had a turn of active service in the Transvaal, west of Pretoria, 1900, for which he wears the Queen's medal with three clasps.
Sanction has been given for the employment of Captain E. H. T. Lawrence, 5th Battalion Connaught Rangers : Captain F. A. Flint, 3rd Battalion Leinster Regiment ; Captain G. S. Carey, and Lieutenant W. H. Edmond-Jenkins, 6th Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, as Superintendents of Police in Uganda, for which Protectorate they will embark in due course, via the Colonial Office.
As we anticipated the command of the 1st Battalion the Leinster Regiment has gone to Major T. St. C. Davidson, second in command of the battalion. Lieutenant-Colonel Davidson has spent close on 24 years in the regiment, and has the Lushai Expedition, 1889 ; Chin Lushai Expedition, 1889-90 ; and the South African war, 1901-02 to his credit.
The battleship Jupiter, attached to the Channel Fleet, has just got in some good gunnery practice with her 6 inch guns off Portland. From her 6 inches she fired 87 rounds and got on the target 85 times, 45 of the hits being bullseyes.
The battleship Exmouth, which has undergone a thorough refit since she returned home from the Mediterranean Station, was commissioned to-day for duty as flagship of Vice Admiral Sir Assheton G. Curzon-Howe, commanding the Atlantic Fleet. The battleship Caesar which carried the flag of the Vice Admiral previously, now reverts to the Devonport Division of the Home Fleet.

C. M. S. REPORT
(Continued from Yesterday).
A Year's Observations.
From the monthly journals sent down by Mr. Hadow, the leader of the party, we have gathered that some of the points which have most impressed themselves on the white men's minds are as follows:-
1. The uniformly good reception they have had at the hands of the people. Natural curiosity has, of course, brought numbers of people to see them, but also on their different tours to spy out the land they have been well received, and have found no trace of opposition, either to themselves or to their message.
2. The extraordinary confidence with which they approach Dr. Lloyd, a perfect stranger to them (or any member of the party, for that matter), and, as he says, "drink any mortal concoction I like to offer, provided, that is, it be strong. An unsweetened solution of ten grains of quinine to the ounce sends the fortunate recipient away writhing, but happy."
3. The pronounced distaste of the Dinka for work. They have never had to work, except in a dreamy, peaceful sort of way, so why, should they now? Their needs are few, for they wear no clothes, and their only ornaments are a few beads and some bits of tin and wire. The very food they eat, mainly dhura, only needs their attention during about half the year, so they don't exactly make things hum in Dinka-land.
It was only at first, and perhaps owing to the example of Dr. Cook's Baganda porters, that they seemed at all willing to work, and when the porters, went back to Uganda, the Dinkas went on strike, which was really quite up-to-date on their part. But, like so many strikers, feeling that the game was theirs, and that in the lack of workers, they only had to name a price in order to get it, they asked such sums for their time and labour that the missionaries started a sort of lock-out, and refused to give higher rates than they had been paying all along.
In time this policy will be justified, but the immediate results were a little trying, for the pioneers found that the necessary cooking, house-work, washing clothes, etc., took a very considerable portion of the time they had wanted to devote to language-study. I should not wonder, on the other hand, if the Dinkas think it rather fun to see these white men spending an hour or so every morning in the attempt to make a fire with damp sticks, and becoming red-eyed with smoke in the process.
4. In spite of their laziness, and this distaste for work, the Dinkas (near Bor, at any rate), are a fine race, physically, being tall, strong, and well-built. They are also quick to learn. and do well what they have learnt to do, so when the desire is aroused for better food, or for articles of barter, and they begin to understand the dignity of labour, they ought to make rapid progress.
5. They are also, as far as can be ascertained at present, a remarkably moral race, and but few of them have been found suffering from any of those vicious diseases which have so decimated other parts of the Sudan. It is sad to read that the sailors on the steamers from Khartoum and Omdurman, and the soldiers sent up to garrison the different stations are gradually introducing vices and horrors of which the Dinkas were formerly ignorant.
6. Of religion, they seem to have but the vaguest ideas. They believe in some kind of great spirit, but his influence is chiefly malign, and inspires them with fear, not love. Conse. quently, their superstitions are numerous, and any form of spiritual communion with the Divine is a thing unknown.
The above notes are necessarily incomplete, and it must be remembered that they only apply to those portions of the huge Dinka tribe with which our men have come in contact during the past twelve months; we do not yet attempt to speak about the rest. It is possible that this year the mission will extend its borders, for it is clear that they have not found out where the majority of the people live, and they do not contemplate settling permanently in so restricted a sphere of action and usefulness.
On the whole, the health of the party was good during the first year, but it is a matter of great regret to all that the Rev. A.M. Thom has recently been obliged to go home on sick-leave, and it is at present uncertain whether or not he will eventually be allowed to return to Bor.
The rest of the party ask us not to forget the part we can take in helping them, and one of them writes:-
"We have heard with our ears and our fathers have declared unto us the noble works that the Lord did in their days and in the old time before them.' Can anyone doubt that He Who has stirred up people at home to provide the means to send us out, Who is even now so mightily stirring hearts to pray for the Dinkas. will hear and answer those prayers ; Most assuredly He is now working in the hearts of the Dinkas. How long or how short the time may be before we are permitted to see the green blade springing up it would be impossible to say, but most certainly we shall see it."

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "EGYPTIAN GAZETTE"
Sir,- In the last number of the "African World" a supplement is included in the form of a photograph of the officers and members of the United Service Lodge of Cairo.
As a mason, very conscious of many shortcomings as regards observance of the splendid principles of the craft, I beg the courtesy of your columns to voice my protest against the indiscriminate and often ill-advised publication of matters connected with the craft in this country.
There may be some who will heartily endorse these few succinct remarks, but should there be any willing to discountenance promiscuous publicity in connection with a matter I have more than ordinarily at heart, I enclose my card and when requested I am willing to vindicate my expression of opinion, which I sincerely trust is presented with the moderation which I always endeavour to bring to bear on all matters really worth considering.
Yours faithfully
This French Table Water was introduced into England about three years ago, and has already gained considerable popularity. The source at which it is bottled is near Nimes in the South of France. The spring itself is situated in an open plain and a long time ago earned for itself the title of "Les Bouillens" on account of the constant bubbling up of carbonic acid gas. In addition to an unusually large quantity of carbonic acid, the water contains an amount of alkaline carbonates. It is undoubtedly a pleasant table water.

A Suffering girl Strengthened.
New Blood put in her Veins by
DR. WILLIAMS' PINK PILLS.
"The doctor said I was suffering from Blood Starvation, and this explained the chilly feelings and shiverings that ran through me." Miss Jessie Holland, who spoke, then related the full story of her trials, which clearly illustrated the depth of despondency to which the victims of anæmla (bloodlessness) are often reduced. Miss Holland resides at 15, Cobdenstreet, Loughborough, and to-day she is a bright, healthy young lady; for this happy restoration she thanks Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People, which filled her starved veins with new good blood.
"For a long time," she stated, "I could not get up in the morning. I seemed quite unable to ronse myself from a heavy drowsiness and languor. As soon as I got out of bed I would be seized by sick, headaches, with bilious attacks; a dizzy sensation would make me

reel, and when I did manage to stagger down-stairs I felt utterly miserable and listless. My eyes became watery, hollow, and sunken, while my cheeks and lips grew ghastly white and bloodless. No matter how thick my clothing was I could not keep warm, and at nights I could not sleep. Sometimes it seemed that I had not closed my eyes all night. Neither by day nor night was I free from the headaches. I lost all desire for food, and no dainties could tempt me. In fact, I detested the sight of food. If I took a cup of tea I was seized with pains in my chest. I became a mere shadow, and so short of breath that a sharp, shooting pain tore through my side with every breath, and my heart palpitated violently. Often I fainted in the street. My nerves got the better of me completely. 1 lost all interest in life, and nothing could lift me out of my depressed state. I felt utterly worn out. By the end of the day I felt so helpless that I had to be assisted about.
"I took medicine of all sorts, but felt no better ; my stomach was too weak to retain it. I began to faint so frequently that I had at last to give up work altogether. When in this despondent state of mind and body I took the advice of a neighbour and gave a trial to Dr. Williams' Pink Pills. Mine was an aggravated case of anæmia; so it did not surprise me that no great relief was felt at first. But when I had taken the fourth box of Dr. Williams' Pink Pills I had a desire to eat; my digestion improved , and after meals I had no pains. I slept well, and got up feeling quite vigorous. I continued the pills, and grew stronger and stronger. The pains round my chest disappeared; I could take outdoor exercise

CRICKET
RAILWAY INSTITUTE
versus 3RD COLDSTREAM GUARDS. The victorious career of the Institute received a check last Friday, the Coldstreams giving them their first defeat. Both sides were able to command strong teams. The Guards having won the toss batted first. Revell and Green went to the wickets, but when only 3 the former was bowled. Nothing much was done till Morhrstadt partnered Green for the fourth wicket. With the total at 66 Morhrstadt left and four runs later Wilson bowled Green. The latter had scored 40 out of 70 made while he was at the wicket. Lieut. Campbell and Stevens played well and 123 were up before the last wicket fell. On the home team going in Silver created a sensation by clean bowling Rev. Burns and Colonel Macauley in his first over. Attwood, May and Davies were all bowled in quick succession and it was not till Walker partnered Major Liddell that the score began to mount up. The Major left when the total was at 59. He had played in brilliant style for 33. The last three wickets I put on 20 Walker being the last man out for a carefully compiled 20 the total reaching 79. For disposing of the Institute for this total the Guards have to thank Sergt. Silver who bowled splendidly. Both sides fielded well. The Guards thus won by 44 runs. Scores :
