THE GREATEST care should be taken in what we eat and drink, yet we are too often indifferent and careless, notwithstanding health depends on what we eat and drink.
In regard to drink nothing but the best should be taken. It costs no more than the indifferent quality, if people would only ask for what they know is the best Old Scotch Whisky is the most wholesome beverage yet known Mackie's Scotch Whisky gives an undoubted guarantee to those who are not judges of quality.

I hereby certify that I have taken samples of every vatting of Mackie's White Horse Celler Blend of Scotch Whisky used
in bottling during the month of September, and the results of my analyses
indicate that it conforms to the standard for Pot Still Scotch Whisky set up
in the London case. I am also of opinion that it is an old Whisky of
excellent quality and flavour, which has been well matured in wood.

A very interesting art icle has just been published in the Deutsche Revue" by "A Diplomatist," which gives Euglish readers something to think about. The writer professes to wish for better relations between Ger. many and Great Britain. But no English roader can suppose that to be his object, becau e he carefully repeats some of the falsehoods by which the German public has been made hostile to England. We will go over the passages to see what there is true or valuable in them. First of all, the writer says that of late years points of friction have been produced quite superfluously between the two countries and then elaborated by an unscru. pulous Press What were these points of friction quite superfluously produced, and who produced them? Neither the "Diplomatist" nor any other German Government, and each British Government has studiously tried to avoid it. There was the Emperor's message to President Kruger. It was cer. tainly superfluous and caused great pain to those Englishmen, probably the majority, who were as indignant with the authors of the raid as could be either the Emperor or Mr Kruger. Then there was the indident of the right of search for contraband. The English Government was beyond precedent conciliatory and yielding in that case, and the German Government blustering. Yet the English Government had in no way exceeded its rights. Next came Prince Bulow's insulting remarks about the British Army, for which no apology was ever offered and which have never been withdrawn. There was the famous Shanghai incident, when the German Governmont tried to make a secret agreement with China behind the back of the British Government. These were all superfluous causes of friction which would have been avoided had the German Government not been animated by a purpose hostile to England. The writer next refers to the German Navy and thinks
that in Germany there have been foolish and inconsiderate words used on t'e subject. The words which people in England have noted are
first the Emperor's statement, "Our future is I on the water," and next the preamble to the
German Navy Bill, which expressly lays down Is the object of the Bill to enable Germany to
cope with the greatest maritime Power. No Englishman doubts Germany's right to seek her future on the water and to build a feet as big as she can. But every sensible Englishman thinks that his own Government ought to lay down two ships of every class to Germany's one, to train two sailors for Germany's one, and to give twice the care that Germany gives to having the Navy always ready for war, The "Diplomatist" says that England has no cause to be anxious over the size of Germany's Navg. We hope that is true, but Englishmen will be wise never to be too easy about their own Navy, howover good they may believe its condition to be.
The "Diplomatist" says there is room in the world for both Germany and England. That may be the case, but it is remarkablo that the German Government has never yet takon a Colony except Kiauchau, without so arranging as to spring a quarrel upon England in connection with it. The facts about the beginnings of German Colonial enterprise have been carefully concealed from the German public. Then, after a tirade against unnamed persuns in both countries, the "Diplomatist" wishes "the two nations to set to work jointly to employ their acquisitions for the good of mankind." To that sentiment, appar. ently expressed so that he may pose to his German readers as not hostile to England, the "Diplomatist" adds these words : "English politics might be reproached not unjustly with having frequently, and at times with ruthless energy, sought to profit in the past contury from the embarrassments and difficulties of other States." That is the sort of general attack upon England by which for these twenty years the German public has been led to hate our country. It is a monstrous statement, utterly untrue, and, if its writer has any knowledge of English history, he knows it to be untrue and unjust. Yet its writer poses as a peacemaker and denounces the "Yellow Press." All the German writers who writo for the German public on the subject of AngloGerman relations seem to be in one and the the same wrong groove. None of them knows tnything about British feelings. The truth is that before the Boer War there was no ill. ieeling in England towards Germany. But from the beginning to the end of that war the language used in Germany, from one end of the country to the other, was such as to open English people's eyes. An English traveller in Germany would be asked in a tone of kindness which was unquestionable : "Why do your soldiers commit such terrible outrages in this war?" When he replied that the British soldiers were doing nothing of the sort, he would be told that he did not know the facts, and on giving evidence - the evidence frequently being identical with that in the possession of the German Government-would be told that it was no use his talking ; they, the Germans, knew better. The fact is the German public has had its mind systematically poisoned against England, a process in which the Government has not been unconcerned. "Diplomatist's" article is a piece of the same anti-British propaganda, which is never go affective as when disguised as a plea for better relations.
The effect of the German frame of mind, first revealed to the British public at large by the Boer War, but known to close observers long before that event, has been to convince Englishmen that German feeling is ill-disposed to England, and that that feeling has been encouraged by the German Government. For about a year the German Government has not found it convenient to continue to foment illwill, but we have looked in vain for a word from any German in authority in which a trace of kindly feeling could be detected. If the Jerman writers knew England they would know first of all that no one has over at any time wished to respond to German words by warlike acts—that idea is a fiction made in Germany for German consumption ; and secondly, that the impression made by German ill-feeling during a critical time will not be removed by such diatribes as that of "Diploinatist,' and will not begin to disappear until there has been practicable and convincing evidence of real good will to England on the part both of the Government and the people of Germany The partiality in favour of Germany which was so strong in England twenty years ago has been thrown away by Germany, and can perhaps not be restored The two countries stand on a purely business footing, and the balance of affection which Germany used to possess in many an English heart has been exhausted If German diplomatists really wanted to cultivate the goo lwill of England they would not write articles full of groundlegs insinuations and recriminations,

In the 000r80 of her letter Miss Van Sommer points out that since its inauguration the Nile Mission Pro98 has i88ne i more than six million pages of religious literatore.
"This method of propagating the Gnapel in Esypt, Arabia, and the adjacent conntries bas already met with considerable sucr088, as literature can often fiud entrance wbere the missionariee themselves can find none, and there is a readiness in many parts of the country to parohase papers and books brongbt to the villages by colporteurs. Ioability to read is, of course, rapidly decreasing in Eastern land. The missionary societies in their ecbonile are engaged in educating the young. As the pomber of persons able to read increases 80 does the need for providing them with elovating literature. This deel is vital, as very large quantities of atheistic and materialistic literature are being ronred into all parts of the Mobsmedan world."

A SUGGESTION FOR CAIRO.
"Anglo-Egyptián" (Csiro) writas :-I notice n your issue of Toesday that among the Different matters that were to come up for Hiscussion before your Municipal Commission Ehat was held yesterday, was one for the cession or lenge of a suitable site on the new qnay to Mr. Ralli for the constraction of a Casino for zour city. On rouding this, one thing strook me Eorcibly, and that is if Alexa'dria Deeds a Casino bow much more dogs Cairo, which is
early visited by an over-increasing crowd of pleasare seekers? It seems incredible that no eyndica'e has yet thonght of endowing this beautiful capital, the largest and most im. portant city in the whole continent of Africa, with such a bailding, for I feel more than certain that a Ca-ino somoshat similar to those to be found in different fashionable resorts of the Continent would prove a very paying concern. I am informed that the loal press has for years ar.d at different periods been agitating for such a place of entertainment, and further, that the principal hotel companies and proprietors are prepared to oo operate and extend s helping band to any public spirited individ val or group who woold ondertake to give Cairo a Casino. A very fine rite is, I ghonld Ray. the one next to the new Semiramis Hotel which has the advantage of heing beautifnlly situated on the banks of the Nile. I hope that thie onggigtion will help to revive the idea of
Casino for Csiro.
We understand that an offer was made yesterday to the Egyptian Hotels Company for the parobare at L.E. 900,000 of the entire remainder of its land at Gb zireh, bat not inoloding the Ghegireb Palace Hotel and 31,00 metres on the Nile. This leaves 80.000 metres for whiob an offer of parchase has been made and brings the total ostimated price of tbe property, botel and land, to £1,200 000.
The off-r was made on bebalf of the Ghegireb Mansions, Limited, whose shares will he greatly benefited by the transaction, a'd it hoold enhance tbeir value considerably in the near fature, in cojinotion with other powo fal local companies.
We are farther informed that a meeting of the board of direstors of the Egyptian Hotels Company will shortly be bold to coneider the above offer. It seems the romoor mentioned by a contemporary within the past few d-y8 thet a powerful syndicate was negotiating for the purchase of hotel and grounds is altogether without foundation Fidor, we are assurer, the Egyptian Hotels Company bas no present intention of disposing of the Ghesireh Palace Hotel.
The Barque da Caire, the formation of which we have already annoquced in these colamos, will soon be offiially openot. The Board is Composed of some of the bestknowo Egyptian and Syrian potabilities, whh8o names inspire every confidence and serve as a guarantee that tbis undertaking will prove a 300089.

There are boing transformed and altored and will shortly be ready for occupation. The management . will be in the hands of Mr. N. de Senn, late sub-manager of the Banqae de Saloniqne in Cairo, and the assistant manager is Mr. L. Dafaat, who has been in the service of the Anglo-Exyptian Bank in Paris and Cairo doring the past twelve years.

CLOSE OF OPERA SEASON.
There was a triple bill last night, as a wind. ap to the opera season, commodoing with the leist two acts of "Lucia di Lammermoor," in which Signa. Fi, zi again distinguished herself, a) also did Sig. Acerbi as Edgardo. There followed the 3rd act of the "Dandazione di Faust," which was snfficiently well given to receive an encore. The evening, or we abnuld rather say the night, terminated with sig. Galetti's ballet "Fioreal" amid most jovial aroplanse.
The season has not been remarkable for any partionlar "tours de force," bat a moderately good level was in general maintained. The repertory was well varied and fuirly well choren, bat excepting "Carmeu" and pog-ib'y "Pagliac 0," there was nothing in its excontion in the Ditore of a triam, b "Tosca," "Bobème," and "Zes" depended for their 8000888 almost entirely on Signa. Berlendi. The management azo indeed to be ongratulated on having Brloured the services not only of this charming and talented artiste bat also of Sig. de Marobi, who has given as so many opportunites of a'lmiring his splendid vocal and dramatio gifts Sig. Walter's fine performance in "Mefis'ofele" will also not be easily forgotten. Among t o*ber works which were ore litably given we should place "Aida," "Uo Balloin Maschera," and "La L'annazione di F108t," the latter being especial. ly welcome and praiseworthy. There is less to bu said for U2000tti" and "Loreley." and we oright with advantage have been spared a pangled "Lober grio.". In addition to those a ready mentioned, we huve been well pleased wi'b' the performances of Signore de Lerma, Chorkowski, and Grisi, and of course Signa. Finzi, while of the men there is a whole string of poticeable artistes such as Signori Costa, Acorbi, Murcolir, Berriel, and Contini. Maestro Zarcani': antiring efforts and continued success with the be-on again call for mach praiso, thragh his orohestra has not been on a par with last year's. The oboras on the other band bave without exception been thoroaghly satis. tactory and the bullet has also been qnite good All things considered, the season, if not wildly n'ating, h 48 at any rate left little or nothing to gramble at,

The death is appoonood of Mr. Riobard Mansell, who in tha late 'sixties was connected with the Ezyptian Cotton Company, and who sabsequently acquired fame in the theatrical world. lodeed, he was widely known as the "father of comio opera." Mr. Mansell returned to London from Khartoom in 1870, and be. came (in association with his brother) lessee of the Lyceum Thestre, where he produced Hervé's comio opera "Chilperic," and introduo. ed M. In late years he had been general mapager for Mr. E. G. Sanders at the Coronet and Camden Theatres. HOUSE OF COMMONS.-Raplying to Mr. Ro. bertsoo, Mr. Lee agreed that the temporary slackoning in the constraction of new vessel for the Navy was jastifi d, but complaioed of the strength of the sea-going fl-et being redaced. Ho qaoted the foreign comments on Sir H. Campbell-Bannerman'a article.
Sir Honry Campbell. Bannerman generally endorsed the two power standard, bat, be said, wo aro far beyond it. Ciroomstances might modify its necessity. The article in the 'Na. tion" contained nothing to give offance. He insisted that it was the Government's doty to raise the question of armaments at the Hague Conforönoe.
Mr. Balfoor emphasized the suspicions which the Powers would inevitably entertain in view of the reforms in the army and pavy which the Government olaimed made both stronger than over. He protested against any abandonment of the original standard..

The "Cologne Gazette" anuoanoos that the Magbzee has asked the Bulgian Guvernment to appoint a Belgian engide ir to carry out the daties laid down by Article t6 of the Algeciras Convention in the case of selectivg tenders for publio works. It cannot rhen be supposed that Germany regards this action otherwise than in a favourable light.

(Continued from Friday). Bir Helu, "Tue Sweet Worl," is the last well one meets bafore coming to the "Red Sand" which threatens both men and beast. The caravan marobe, through Baeb Estable, i.e., "Gate of the Stable," into the Doffs (bot regioi ) or Hamra je (red earth). Thiagh the dangers of this country may often be exaggerated, they should not be underrated, and this with regard to the indolence of the Bed jaior, who very often have not provisions enough for a three days' j urney in the wide de-art and lose a considerable pamber of animals. The Bedouins do not think enoogh of the entire lack of pastare in the Oasis where their beasts are entirely dependent on dates. The monotony of this lonely place is often brok 90 by sad sighta. Worria oat, emaciated, and abandoned the beast follows the Oyravan. Sometimes the Belonin to whom it belongs sacrifices one day in order to save his property, and remains bebind. Then, that which has often been beard of, happens. The man who is surrounded by the death-like solitado gets frightened at the moanings of his beast; be lo808 bis songe, loses his way, and porishes. Those animals who have been left to their fate very seldom reach the oasis. They may recognizg, atter days or years, their m48tor's whistle and follow his voice. Wild oamels which some travellers are said to have seen at the border of the Difts are merely beasts which have ihas been abandoned.
After all that has been said it showed decidedly extreme plack when, a short time ago, some Siwanese crossed this plain of dea'h on donkeys. W.be I met, later on, hi during camel rider who conveyed the mail from Siwa to Marsa Mutrjub, Wordsworth's verses came back to my mind : Thee hath some awful spirit impelled to leave, Utterly to dusert the haunts of men, Though simple thy companions were and few ; And through this wilderness a passage cleave, Attended but by thy own voico, save when The clouds and fowls of the air thy way pursue.
After Bueb Estable the road changes from 800th-west to due soath. It is crossed and bordered by oi fi and table-rbaped mountains, Re0e8808 of sunken red earth change alternately with salt ornsts in the hi ly land, rich in oyster beds, masses of ses drobins, laud and 80a-8bello. The damp mists refreshing the land, which receives raiu once in six years Ouly, sometimes get denser at sunrize and develop into a bage colourless and toggy olood, i hrowing a reconciling influence over hostile batare. Owing to the limited literature I carried with me I was anable to obtain any explanation of this phenomenon.
The pyramids bearing way-marks are not wanting here, either ; we erected one ourselves not far from Allam Rai, a hollow stone which rich caravans fill with water for the travellers to come. In honour of the leader of the ex
pedition we called it Allam Effendinne. After foar hoora ride you get to Rus El Hamraj (also Allam Baz ir) the centre of the Daffa, and after another foar boors the A'lam Bakatet. Not far from here the routes from Sollom and M 4rea Matroob join. Then follow in rapid 800 Jession Gaber Siwi, i.e., "the Grave of a 8 WADBse," El Namelas and Chaimi Nasrani. Unfortunately nobody could furnish me with any explanation with regard to the two last name: ; especially the term "the Christians' camp." Io Beveu steep descents of the Doffs the way le-ds down to the Ghart el Hunism, & bill shaped like a offia and visible from far. Several orows and groups of sporadically rising plants tell ns of the approaching Oasis beginning at the Ghart el Nakab Aba Berik It had taken as seven days to cross the desert.
The Money Markot. :.
As we prophesied last week, the monetary sitaation continues to show a sabstantial improvement, and the brighter prospects which are now prevalent have even led some filanciers to anticipate an almost immediate redno. tion in the Bauk rate. As we pointed out in oar last artiole, however, the probability tbat the Directors will at the present time take any faribor steps in this direction is very slight, fir although it is generally recognised even by the pessimists that the period of stress is past, the situation is yet anoertaio, and a nomber of circumstances are operating in favour of a continuation of the policy of gaution which the Bank bas 80 commendably carried oat during the recent troublóas times.
A great deal of attention is now being tarded to the Unired St stes in conseqnence of the passing by the United States Senate of the Aldrich Bul. This measure is caloolated to exercise a very salatary eff sot apon the futare of money mivements in the States, and although it is impossible at the moment to 1g4nge the precise measure of relief the Bill
will give to the market, it is confi tently expected that the immediate prospect will be improved and that the stringencies which have been soch & deplorable featare in the Aatamn Beason in past years may be avoided in fatore. As oatlined by the "Wall Street Journal" the changes which the Aldrich Bill makes in the existing laware :| Authorising the issue of 10 dola. gold certi.
fiate, the limit now being 20 dola. | Authorising the issue of United States notes for one, two, and five dollars, in lien of larger denominations of sach notes. The limit now i8 ton dollars. The existing amount of soch notes is not to be increased.
Authorising any national bank to issue one. tbird in amount of its oirculation in five dollar notes. | Authorising the deposit io national banks of
receipts from customs. 1 Extending the limit of retirement of national bank ciroa'ation from 3,01 0.000 dols. to 9,000,000 duls per month, or from 36,000,00 dolg. to. 108 0-0, 00 dole. per annum.
The leading Lindon bankers continue to give much attention to the subject of strengthening their cash holdings. A mesting of the clearing bankers has been called for to-morrow, and it is understood that ihs two most important points to be dixousied are the question of the publ carion of month y balance sheets, based opon weekly or dai y averages, and the time at which the new arrangements, if adopted, shull come into forcy. This is a very desirable reform, and it is buped that the bankers may 888 their way to adopt it.
The Bank retarn this week shows the move. ments to have been somewhat adimportant. The reserve 148 been reduced by £211,000, chirily the result of the expansion of the bote circulation thut D:Dally precedez the turn of the month. The stook of ballion is £ 4,000 higher, despite a net emix of £71,000 for abro-d, but the pote circulation bas increased by £264,000, and the proportion of reserve to liabili:ies in per cent. lower on the week at 474 per cent. The total re-erve, £27.294,000, compared with £27,448,000 a year ago. The Stook Markets.
The passing of the cloud which has over shadowed the money market for some time past bas cast a ray of cheertalness over the Stock Markets, which have during the latter part of the week displayed a mach better tendepoy. The ancertaiaty of the monetary outlook, and fears that America might agaii have to be reckoned with, impose i a great strain on members of the "Hooge," and has been in a very appreciable measure responsil le for the lifeless tone which has been a featme of the stock markets during recent weeks. The annonno mant that the Senate at Washington had passed by a large majority, the Aldrich Currency Bill, and the ur spects that the Bi : will pass through the final stages and br placed opon the Statate Book withont serious adverse alteration, caused a distinot feeling of relief, and the spirit of optimism has been increased by the satisfactory couglasion of the Boltlement.
Of course, the amount of new business which is being trang noted is small, and the is little 08089 for anything approachig eptbubinem, but the more hopefal fteling wib which brikers can face the now account is something to be thankful for, after the deep gloom of the past month.
To-day the cheertal tendenoy on the stock exabanga has continued, and the majority of the changes are favourable.
Consols.
The gilt-edged section h 38 been mach firme this work, and Consols have considerably.
hanefited by the easing of the money, position. They close to-pight at 87 to for the aoodant, thne abowing a gain on the week of it. Porolgn Bonds.
The international market is forta, and in several sections abow a substantial advance. Rassians have received strong support. bat to-day they have been opposed. The Fives clo-o at 85, a loss of , while the Foars are It dowa at 76.
Japanese stooks have also been favoured daring the past two diye, although in the early part of the week thay wore very dall. On Wedoesday the First Fjar-and-a-half per cont. jumped 1 1 while the Sacoad Series I gained 1 $. Yasterday all the series regiatered advances, the Sixes being higher. The advande in Japanese has to-day been well maintained. Homo Ralla.
After dwelling for weeks apon the hopeless coodition of home railway sbares, it is satisfac. tory to be able to report this week a decidedly better tendency The pressure to sell which had been very marked in poveral directions bas DOW ceased, and this has caused a reboand to higher qnotations. This was especially the case in Brighton Ordinary, which yesterday added three points, and Brighton Preference and Deferred, which were ap 2 and if respectively. North Easterns also joined in the opward movement to the extent of it South Western Ordinary, Midland R fe-red, and Soath Eastern
Preference were all 1 bighor at the close. | To-day the heavies have been supported.
There are several advances of . Amorloans. | Io Wall St. there has been a great deal of pressure of sales, attributed largely to liqaidation by weak bulls, and this has caused the market here to be doll. Prices in consequence are lower all round, and in some cases the deo'ine has been rather important. Baltimoro, Chicago Milwaukee, Soathorn Preference and Louisvile appear to be the greatest soff rers. Yesterday Southern Preference were pat down 6 points. Nori bern Psoifio, after dropping 47 early in the week, improved , but were yesterday again dowo 85 points."
There has been a substantial recovery in Amaricans to-day. Baltimore, Chesapeake, and Milwaukee are op 1}, Missouri 1:18, while Southern Prof. bave improved to the extent of 2 points.
Egyptians. 1 Tha Egyptian market bas now a slightly better sppearance, although there is no increare of business, and prices show little im. provement.
National Bank of Egypt are ap to 87 after being as low as 27) and Agricultural Bank are better at 9 H on the divided of 9 s. per sbare. The Pret renco are upchanged at :9 f. and the Debontares at 90 6. Daira Sanieh have changed hands at 17 } for a few shares, and close 175-4, the Deferred romsining 96 8 nominal. Delta Preference Bearer have sagged away to 11g, and Delta Land and Investment are about 4 t.
Egyptian Estates keep fairly firm at 2ta; while Salt and soda and Egyptian Markets are on mentioned at 1 and i to. Corporation of Western Egypt are still a very dall market at | H, and the now shares at about discount. Khedivial Msil are sappored to be 1$, and the Preference 4 f. l'here is absolutely nothing doing in Union Fopoière or Land Bank, which are qnoted 6 5 8 and 9-respectively. Bank of Romania have b300 rather uffo -ed at 10. Mining.
Satisfac'ion is felt in the mining section that the settlement has passed off no satisftotorily, and a good tone preysily, although most of (bo
bares are qniet. At the beginning of the week De Beers Deferred were sold from Paris, the quotation losing in one day H, to 29 . l'hey buve since been firmer.
Yesterday Witwatersrand Daop were iu demand from Germany, and Knight Central attracted attention on the issue of a satisfactɔry cable.
There his boon a firm tone in mining shares to-tay, thoagh prioes baye roasted somewhat from the best.
Egyptian mining shares have been dull, and the movements seem to be confined to a fall of 34. in Egyptian Minos Exploration to 8:. Nile Valley are anobanged at 4/3.

"The Egyptian Gazette" Series is the most artistic collection to be found in Egypt.
"The Egyptian Gazette" Series is the most artistic collection to be found in Egypt.
The Egyptian Gazette has much pleasure in presenting to its subscribers the accompanying description of some of the many interesting routes by which they may travel homewards. Great care has been taken to arrange them as accurately and concisely as possible, and it will be found that none of them are fraught with difficulty. In choosing the route home there are several things to be considered. To begin with there is the difference in climate between Egypt and the various points at which you may arrive in Europe.
This depends partly upon the month in which you leave Egypt, for Cairo in January may be a little warmer than the Riviera and possibly not so warm as Sicily, but in March it will be warmer than Rome, and more uniformly warm than many other places in Europe. Many people leave Egypt far too early in the year, for as a rule the weather in April and May is perfect. The warmest place to go to on leaving Egypt is Sicily.
Some will want to take into consideration the number of days to be spent at sea, and we therefore subjoin a list shewing the time occupied on each of the various routes between Egypt and the Continent of Europe.
They are as follows:—
The long sea routes—from Port Said or Alexandria to Plymouth, Southhampton, London or Liverpool—occupy about 14 days. The short ones are as follows:—
The steamers of the P.& O., the Egyptian Mail S.S,. Co., North German Lloyd, Orient, and Messageries Maritimes are the largest. The Anchor, British India, Bibby and Henderson Lines are also excellent, and their steamers are largely patronised by travellers to Egypt.
As regards the train journeys from Cairo, the shortest is that to Alexandria, without change (3 hours). That to Port Said can now be made without change in 4 ½ hours.
The least expensive way to England is by the Moss, Papayanni, Prince, and Westcott lines of steamers from Alexandria to Liverpool. The German Levant line has also good steamers from Alexandria to Hamburg.
The quickest through Continental routes are by P.& O. Brindisi express from Port Said, by the Egyptian Mail S.S. Co., from Alexandria to Marseilles and the Austrian Lloyd Trieste Vienna express from Alexandria.
As regards heavy luggage, it must be borne in mind that very little luggage is allowed free on the railways of Europe, but there are several good and responsible forwarding agents in Egypt who undertake at a fixed charge to deliver packages to any address in Europe. The Egyptian Mail S.S. Co., have also made arrangements whereby luggage can be collected and sent to any address.
The quickest manner of getting to Europe from Port Said is undoubtedly by the
fast Mail Steamers "Osiris" and "Isis" to Brindisi. One of these leaves Port
Said every week, as soon as possible after receiving the Indian
These small but comfortable ships have enormously powerful engines, and attain a very high rate of speed. They are called the "Ferry Boats" having been specially built to carry the British mail from Port Said to Brindisi. If you are going straight through to England you will find the train waiting at Brindisi which will take you to Calais without changing. It has complete arrangements for sleeping and eating on board, and you should arrive in London on the fifth day from leaving Port Said.

The direct route to Sicily is by the Florio-Rubattino Co.'s steamers which
leave Alexandria weekly for MESSINA, where one takes train to TAORMENA, one
of the most charming and popular places on the island. Giardini is the station at which to alight, and the drive up to
Taormina is most delightful, occupying about one hour. In and around the
town is much to interest the visitor. The theatre is of Greek origin, but
restored under the Romans. CATANIA is the starting place for the ascent of
Etna, and here also is a fine Cathedral. The Greek, Roman, and Saracenic
remains that are found all over the island, are an endless sources of
pleasure. SYRACUSE has an interesting history, having been a Greek city,
which was designed by Demosthenes in B.C. 413, and taken by the Romans in
B.C. 212, when Archimedes was slain—his tomb is to be seen. The cathedral
was once an ancient pagan temple. PALERMO, with about 300,000 inhabitants,
is the capital of the Island, and enjoys a delightful climate. Much of
interest is to be found in this fine city. The Palazzo
Reale is of Saracenic origin and close to it the church of S. Giovannia degli Eremiti with its picturesque
cloisters. The Cathedral, Museum, Botanic Gardens, Villa Giulia and Royal
Park are also worth a visit.
The fine steamers of the North German Lloyd leave Alexandria every Wednesday during the season for Naples, the voyage being only 3 days.
NAPLES is also reached in 10 hours from Palermo by the Florio-Rubattino Co.'s
steamers, which leave daily. One cannot approach Naples or leave it without
wishing to explore some of its islands, besides the lovely places on its
bay—Castellamare and Sorrento. The small steamer that takes you to Sorrento [you can
drive too] will take you on to Capri.
From Naples to ROME is a train journey of but five hours. All who can will devote at least one week to visiting the many historical and interesting portions of the Eternal City, whose charms and beauties are too well-known to need comment here.
Leaving the Eternal City with much regret, a railway journey of five hours
brings you to FLORENCE, where another week can well be spent admiring the
City of Flowers and its surrounding country. In
Florence itself the churches and galleries are of absorbing interest, whilst
the local promenades and excursions should not be omitted. The Cascine is the most attractive and fashionable promenade in
Florence, whilst the Viale dei Colli, one of the
finest walks in Europe, opened 35 years ago, goes winding up through the
hills a distance of four miles. The most delightful excursion outside
Florence is that to Vallombrosa, with its Monastery 3,300 feet above the sea level. This is
made first by ordinary train from Florence to St.
Ellero, thence by cog-wheel railway to Saltino. The ascent through groves of oaks takes an hour, and most
striking panoramas are unfolded to view.
PISA is easily reached from Florence in about 2 hours ; here there is a fine Cathedral and the Leaning Tower. A stay of at least one night should if possible be made in order to enjoy the view from the Campanile at sunset.
VIAREGGIO. One of the most delightful places on the Italian Riviera near Pisa and on the main line from Rome to Genoa. It is a very convenient half-way house between Egypt and England, and where living is reasonable and the air and surroundings exceptionally good.
GENOA (La Superba).—The most picturesque and interesting city in Italy, with the record of having one of the lowest death averages of European cities and a phenomenally equable temperature—warm in winter and deliciously cool breezes from the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean in summer.
The patriarchal home of Italy's most ancient nobility, whose palaces, gardens, and famous collections of statuary, frescoes, and paintings, are a constant delight to thousands of travellers who annually sojourn in Genoa. Then there are the superbly decorated medieval churches containing exquisite marble columns and historical paintings, and the incomparable Campo Santo filled with its wonderful tombs.
From Genoa to Milan is a matter of only three hours by rail.
MILAN is a good centre for Northern Italy before making the tour of the Lakes. The Cathedral is the principal attraction, with its beautiful windows illustrating the History of the Bible. The public gardens and the monumental cemetery are also worth a visit.
Between Bologna and Milan and only an hour and a half from Milan is
SALSOMAGGIORE, a renowned health resort on account of its thermal springs,
change trains at Borgo San Domino and in half-an-hour
you are at Salsomaggiore.

HOTEL DE LUXE.
VENICE is a 5 hours journey by rail from Milan, and one of the most delightful places imaginable to pass a quiet stay. The total absence of vehicular traffic strikes one as very strange; no horse, cart, carriage or bicycle is to be seen, and yet there is the sound of life at every turn. The approach to Venice from the Adriatic is unlike that of any other sea port. The town seems to be gradually, like Aphrodite, born of the sea. No hills behind, no stretches of rock, but first the tops of Campaniles appear above the horizon, then slowly the whole glittering town rises like a fairy mirage out of the calm lagoon.
Going northwards from Milan you make the tour of the
beautiful Italian lakes.
COMO, the birthplace of the younger Pliny, is reached in one-and-a-quarter hours by train by way of Monza.
Boats leave Como frequently for the other towns on the lake, which is very
beautiful, and the scenery on either side going up the lake is most
enchanting. CERNOBBIO is a charming spot; then come Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, and Menaggio with the prettily-situated town of Bellaggio opposite. The walk from Tremezzo
along the shore of the lake to Menaggio is most
enjoyable. A steam tram runs from Menaggio to Porlezza on Lake Lugano in three-quarters of an hour,
then steamer to Lugano in two-and-three-quarter hours.
Switzerland, the heart of Europe, has been described
as "A cluster of delights and grandeurs."
LUGANO is some 20 miles from Como and reached by train in one-and-a-half hours. It has a population of 10,000 people and is charmingly situated on the Lake of Lugano, amidst lovely Italian scenery. Around it rise M. San Salvatore, M. de Caprino.and M. Generoso.
LOCARNO may be reached by rail from Bellinzona in forty minutes. This pretty town, situated at the top of Lake Maggiore, has a mild climate and is an excellent winter resort. The church Madonna del Sasso, situated above the town, is worth a visit, as it contains interesting paintings, "Entombment," by Ciseri, and 'Tho Flight into Egypt," by Bramantion.
LUCERNE—A striking picture on the Lake of Lucerne facing the Rigi and Pilatus and the snow-clad Alps.
In and around the town the walks are charming, and the excursions to be made from Lucerne by boat, rail, etc., are very numerous.
The Lake of Lucerne abounds in delightful excursions,
those to the Rigi, Pilatus,
Burgenstock and Sonnenberg
needing a special visit each. Other excursions on the lake can be made by
steamer, and the ever-changing scenery on the trip from Lucerne, to Fluelen is a source of delight
to the lover of nature.
BRUNNEN, charmingly situated on the most beautiful part of the Lake of
Lucerne, commands magnificent views of lake and mountain scenery. Along the
Lake of Uri from Brunnen to Fluelen runs the famous Axentrasse.
THUN (on the Lake of Thun) half an hour from Berne and one hour from Interlaken. Quiet and quaint; sheltered from winds; just the place to rest and recuperate. Beautiful walks, through woods, and along the lake shore. Kursaal, Concernts, Casino, Races, Tennis, Boating, etc.
THE BERNESE OBERHAND. – INTERLAKEN, a favourite summer resort and the best
centre for making excursions in the Oberland, abounding in fine walks and
views. There is a magnificent view of the Jungfrau
from the Hoheweg, a fine avenue of walnut trees, the chief resort of
visitors. Interlaken is also not far from the famous waterfalls, Giessbach, Trummelbath and Staubbach. Then also the glaciers of Grindelwald and view from Murren and the Schynige Platte are sights
not to be missed.
CHATEAU D'OEX. 3,500 ft above the sea on the new Electric Railway between Montreux and Interlaken, surrounded by magnificent scenery, with pure dry air. Much frequented by English people in Summer and Winter.
ZURICH on the Gothard route. Direct communication with Northern Europe. Largest town in Switzerland, beautifully-situated on the lake of Zurich. Theatres. Big Concern Halls. Boating on the lake. Excellent schools. The National Museum.
Many people visit Greece after wintering in Egypt, as it is so easily reached from Alexandria ; the climate in April is charming. The best steamers are those of the Khedivial Mail Co. and the Russian Steam Navigation Co.
If possible tourists should arrange to be in Athens for the Orthodox Easter in order to witness the Good Friday and Easter Eve ceremonies, and to be present at the dancing on the Easter Tuesday festival held at Megara for which a special train is run from Athens.
It is worth while to spend a few days in CORFU on account of the beauty of the scenery. There is also good snipe and quail shooting to be had.
