THE GREATEST care should be taken in what we eat and drink, yet we are too often indifferent and careless, notwithstanding health depends on what we eat and drink.
In regard to drink nothing but the best should be taken. It costs no more than the indifferent quality, if people would only ask for what they know is the best Old Scotch Whisky is the most wholesome beverage yet known Mackie's Scotch Whisky gives an undoubted guarantee to those who are not judges of quality.

I hereby certify that I have taken samples of every vatting of Mackie's White Horse Celler Blend of Scotch Whisky used
in bottling during the month of September, and the results of my analyses
indicate that it conforms to the standard for Pot Still Scotch Whisky set up
in the London case. I am also of opinion that it is an old Whisky of
excellent quality and flavour, which has been well matured in wood.

MONDAY, FEBRUARY. 7, 1907
To say that the result of the General Election in Germany has come as a surprise to Europe would he a mild way of expressing the universal astonishment. It has surprised the Germans themselves. For months past every newspaper save those under Government control has been filled with denunciations of the personal rule, the Chancellor, and the colonial system. We were assured that when the voice of the people spoke they would sweep away all these abuses without hesitation; the Socialists would control the Empire, the Emperor and his advisers would become mere Constitutional puppets, and there would be an immediate inauguration of that now earth which can dispense with the old heaven. It is not the first time that the prophets have been confounded. The people have spoken and spoken deliberately in favor of the Kaiser. The Socialists, though still strong, hare received a tremendous check where they expected to advance; and, unfortunately, it seems that the more moderate elements of the party have disappeared in the conflict, while the loud- tongued extremists remain. We are now in possession of the result* of the second ballots. These, as a Reuter's telegram says, have completed the rout of the Socialists, while all the other parties have gained considerably. The Clerical Centre remains numerically much so before, but they are* now by far the strongest force in the Aleichem; and with the support of the Poles, on which they can sometimes reckon, they will, be in a majority over am I the other parties united, unless the Socialists should- join with the Conservatives — a contingency hardly likely to occur. The net result is a vote of confidence in the Imperial policy.
So decisive a verdict is repudiation enough of those "pessimists" whom the Emperor recently -rebuked. We may take it that Germany as a whole supports the vigorous foreign and colonial policy of the last few years. Apparently, too, that policy, so far as it is concerned with external affairs, will be treated by the 'new Reichstag in a more conciliatory manner. The entire y reasonable demand for the creation of a separate Colonial Office will probably be agreed to without much demur: the natural tendency of the present majority would be to insist on reform, and not abolition, of the colonial administration. The military expenditure of the Empire, which for the last decade has shown little more than the automatic annual increase, was not severely attacked in the late Parliament; it will assuredly fare still easier in the new one. The naval programme is on a different footing. Many of the members just elected hold, as strongly as we do in England, that the German Navy is being enlarged far beyond its legitimate and necessary size. But, although its coat will be grumbled 1 at by every politician who remembers that he is still a human being with a limited purse, it is unlikely that the Kaiser will have much difficulty in getting his programme voted if he plays his cards well. In this matter he may be relied upon to do so. Whether he will again embark on that spirited foreign policy which has practically isolated Germany in Europe time alone can show. But it is evident that the Moroccan adventure has not alienated his people, and there is still more than enough scope for his vagaries in the Moslem world. It would seem at first sight that one danger has disappeared. A rudimentary maxim of politics declares that attention can be diverted from discontent at home by raising the cry of danger abroad. But as the Kaiser has not at the moment to fear the former, ho will not necessarily be forced to the latter. Whether the position will continue as favorable is another question.

The London correspondent of the "Yorkshire Post" says :—When Parliament reassembles the attention, of the Government will, I bear, be called to the rather remarkable utterance of Sheikh- M. H Kiwaid at the annual dinner of the Pan-Islamic Society in London last week, when he denounced in rather strong language the , "despotism of Lord Cromer," under whom "educated Museuimans in Egypt are groaning." The Government are to be asked to state definitely the grounds for school an assertion, and there is a disposition in certain quarters to press for a full inquiry into the relations between Lord Cromer and the Mohamdan community in Egypt for the past few
l have authority for saying that this surprised the Foreign Office quite ft as the general public. and that cables have already been sent to Lard Cromer in connection with the matter. Lord Cromor has usually been regarded as a firm friend and protection of the following of Islam in Egypt, though it has been known : that for some time past there his boon an 1 undercurrent of feeling against him among some of the Moslems in Cairo. I am assured, however, that the Government have every confidence in Lord Cromer, and will give him their firm support in all his recent notions.

In 1888, a Hellene, Achille Stavraki wedded according to Hellenic law, and had three children, two of wom are dead. After fifteen years of happiness, Stavraki went to Constantinople and became a Mussoluman taking the name of Ibraheim Bey Zaki. By becoming a Mohamedan, he also acquired Ottoman nationality. No sooner had he altered his faith than he spurned his Christian wife, to espouse the rich widow of Osman Bey Namek, Mme Stavrki, who was left again without means, sued her renegade husband before Hellenic Consular Court, which, however, declared its incompetence, as the man was now an Ottoman subject. She therefore took her case to the mixed Court, claiming an indemnity of L.E. 30,000 in her own name and that of her surviving child, Katina. She pleaded her extreme poverty, adn a claim on her husband's bounty on the ground that she was still according to Hellenic law his legal wife.
On wednesday week before, Judge Herzbruch, Maltre Ballis appeared for the plaintiff and Maltre Avlontis for the defendant. The defence was that Mme. Stavraki could not claim in the name of her daughter as her father is responsible. The Court admitted this point and stated that she could only claim for herself. Judgment was therefore given on that basis, Mms. Stavraki being awared L.E. 3,000 with costs to defendant. The plaintiff does not consider this sum sufficient compensation, and has decided to appeal.

A Cairo correspondent writes: At an informal meeting of shareholders of the Egyptian Cotton Mills, Ltd., held at the Anglo-Egyptian Bank at 6 pm. on the 5th inst, Mr. Book, who was-in the chair, introduced Baron, representing a syndicate, who submitted a scheme for the reconstruction of the company, but Mr. C. Finales pointed out that it would be useless to attempt reconstructing the company so long as l he oxide of 8% was imposed, and proposed that the Board should approach the Government with a view to obtaining a remission of that heavy harden, failing which the company should be liquidated. This was unanimously agreed to, aid Me. Carton de Wiart announced that next month another meeting of shareholders would be called, and the division of the Government communicated, as also any farther developments which might arise.
This appears to be a fitting opportunity for the Government to be magnanimous and save one of the few industrial companies in Egypt from a forced liquidation owing to a tax which has already absorbed one-eighth of its capital, and has practically killed this industry.

Professor Breccia informs us that there is not a word of troth in this story, which is pore invention, evidently arising to the following facts. Mahmoud Pasha el Gilaki, in his memoir on ancient Alexandria, published at Copenhagen in 1878, spoke of a sort of stone wheat discovered in the gardens of the Prussian Consulate, but he conjectured that the renowned library had been situated in the garden of the Maison de Larnin. Dr. Botti in studying the Harris MSS, found a sketch of a block of granite with a little rectangular moat running roved 'he upper part, and Mr. Harris had made the following annotation:
"A block of granite dug upon the ground of Mr. De Laurin at Alexandria 1847."
Count Alex. Max de ZOgheh has accepted the theory of Falaki and palced the site of the library between the French Consulate and the Bourse Tonssoun. Sir Massie Blomfield has disputed the topographical theory based on the discvoery of the block of granite. On teh front of his book there was an inscription in Greek in which the name of the Dioscoride appeared FRom these sources the news of the recent discovery of ten manuscript rolls of Dioscorides has been resurrected and the honour of the imaginary find has been ascribed to Professor Breccia.
In the second performance of "Mephistopheles," Sig. Lucentio and the orchestra were if possible better than before. Here they were not so good. The boors collapsed hopelessly: they do well enough for light work bat their voices were too thin for really difficult music, la orchestra they miss notes, go flat or sharp, out of time,—in faot, they fail. One feature was noticeable in tho voices of Signa. Fabris and Sig. Batumi—their low notes. His are always a charm, and hers now and again are like perfect 'cello notes; were high notes are shrill and thin at times, bat she always reads the part well. She took the part of Elena and the difference between her version and that of Signa. Orbellini was most marked. Sig. Battani is not doing nearly so well as in the summer, especially in his high notes. Either he has a bad cold, or else possibly his voice is passing through some phase: has exotified sweetness to power at times. The "Lontano, lantana" they did.not go well, but that was not his fault, his low notes, even at their best, "carry" much more than Signa. Fabris, who WAS almost inaudible. Well, for all the mistakes and deficiencies not unexpected in each a difficult opera, the character of the cast was really brought out, and aa far as one could tell, appreciated fully. A mediocre if correct performance would have been far more memorable as all the delicate and impressive features would have been lost
The management might have informed the public that Signa. Fabris was to take the part of Elena in the Second part of the piece, but, after all when once on the stage Signa. Fabris voice and: interpretation of the Mme were to markedly distinct from the rather florid though charming singing of Signa. 0rbellini, that only a few of those present failed to notion the change of casts.

This match was replayed yesterday, the first outset ending in a draw one goal all. The play was keen throughout. And the interest kept up until the last minute. The Innis- killing Fusiliers made a great start, scoring a goal is the first few minute, play, but the Coldstreams after this first spurt seemed to have rather the best of the game, and at the ball of half-time the score was two alL The Irishmen had the wind the second half, and it was generally expected that they would add to- their SCORE but they disappointed their supporters; the Guards, increasing their score to 8 goals, won the match, thus qualifying for the finals.
The Fusiliers played a plucky game against their stalwart opponents, but they handicapped themselves by not strictly observing the laws of the game, the penalties exacted for tripping, pushing with the hands, etc., going against them. For the Gaurds, the back played a very sound game.
The final will be played at Alexandria tomorrow afternoon.

We were glad to see a large gathering of the fair sex to witness the first matches of the tournament. Nine teams have entered, and judging form the first two games, we are likely to see some very good polo.
FIRST MATCH
I. Team (white). v F Team (red)
I Team were rather fancied for this match, but the lacked combination. In the first chukker Major Paterson's side asserted their sueriority and scored two goals, and in the second chukker they added another. With the score 3 to love against them the Whites began to wake up, adn Capt. Roberts made atrenous efforts to score for his side. Mr. Dudgeon making a fine shot from a difficult angle scored their one and only goal. In teh 4th chukker the Reds scored one more goal, the final score being: F Team, 4 goals; I team, 1 goal. For the winners, Major Paterson and Mr. Bowem played very well. Mr. Tollemache showed great steadiness. For the losers, Capt. Roberts played his best, but as stated before there was no combination.
SECOND MATCH
White C v. B Red.
B Team were generally considered the stronger team, and their first goal being scored in the first two minutes seemed to confirm this. In teh secnd chukker C. team equalized and shortly afterward Mr. Schreiber, steadying the ball, brought off an excellent shot at goal. Capt. Dunbat and Mr. Beckwith made great efforts to equalize, but to no avail. In the third chukker, Mr. Schriber, who was, we noticed, unmarked throughout the game, came away with a rush and brought the score to 3 to 1. And in the 4th chukker the same player added yet another goal. Final score : C Team, 4 goals; B team, 1 goal.
For the winners, Mr. Schrieber played the best game he has playedd this season, which is saying a good deal. Sir Walter Barttlot was very steady at back, keeping his place and hitting well.
The first race meeting of the season at Minieh took place, by kind permission of Omar Bey Sultar, on his resource at Damaris on Mcbday, 4th inst., in delightful weather. The use of the word "grave," taken in conjunction with the recent Ministerial attack' on the Lords, is considered to show that the first business of the session will relate to the struggle with the House of Lords. It is believed that the procedure indicated by Lord Advocate Shaw on-25th January is likely to be followed. The general expectation of the Liberals is that the legislative programme will be modified for considerations of strategy, in order to avoid giving the Lords the advantage of an inevitable appeal to the country. The Temperance and area will probably be placed in the background and the English Land Bill brought to the forefront. An additional rallying cry to the Education Bill will thus be obtained. (R.)

The 'Dé|èohe Coloniale" publishes an interesting article by
Furthermore, Dr. Samne says that the wealth of Egypt has its origin in the co-operation t f European capital, which took the road to Egypt simply because England guaranteed its security. Therefore, he argues every Egyptian who takes part in the campaign of the Nationalist party and works for the expulsion of British control takes up a position entirely hostile to the material interests of his country. In case Mustapha Kamel and his partisans were to be successful, he predicts a fatal debacle for Egypt
" From Mustapha Kamel's policy it is evident that the Egyptian Nationalist party is almost inclined to prefer the suzerainty of the Sultan to that of England. It is, therefore, not to the emancipation of Egypt that the programme of this partly would lead, but to a positively disastrous subjection."
The following is n translation of an interesting article on the subject of the proposed new site at Siouf of the Alexandria Sporting Club's ground, which appeared recently in the "Phare d'Alexandrie" :—
In our issue of the 31st inst. we indicated a scheme of which the conception
seems to ns most happy, and whose realization we have warmly recommended,
because wo see in it a very real advantage, an undoubted progress for the
embellishment of Alexandria, and the satisfaction of Alexandrians. It
consists of, as our readers have already understood, of the scheme of H E.
The choice is most judicious. It could not be better. We showed summarily in our first articles the numerous advantages which the installation of the new hippodrome at Siouf offers, with all its dependencies, such as grandstands, music-stauds, social gatherings, sporting grounds, etc. This idea, which we have submitted to our readers, has everywhere received the liveliest approval. We have received a number of congratulations addressed to its promoters and adherents. It could not have been otherwise. The new scheme would respond fully to a doable desideratum. From a sporting point of view, the sure choice is irreproachable, both as regards situation and vast exeat. But above all, it involves secondary advantages which for Alexandria society will be promptly considered as the chief. Indeed it is necessary to insist on a point which we did not more than touch upon the other day. This scheme, which one can without exaggerating qualify as grand, will perforce entail not only the creation but the practical use of a delightful promenade of a perfect circuit free to motor cars and carriages and forming the ideal of which the Alexandrians d earn who have been deprive I to the day of long and agreeable promenades. 'The race-course opened at Siouf, apart from the Ramleh road so charming, and which will not be about will necessitate the route along the back of the Mohammed Canal, now directed, is order to give the Alexandrians on sporting days, and even on all occasions, this following delicious and novel journey :—
Starting from Retta Gili: the avenue leading to the Nondepot of the Water Co. ; then a run towards the coal, under delicious shade (for if the road has been abandoned the trees remain); a bait at Naught Garden -, so delightfully picturesque aid fresh, that 'it would be criminal to parcel it out for race-course according to A certain scheme which is not worth discussion ; then a slop at Villa Antonia de», the most artistically SNMP loons of suburban property, past Haggar characteristic active quarter ,finally Sanofi sporting meetings, tea, flirtation-, social meetings, and return by 8an Stefano ; vi the Corniche road, whose completion is only question of mouths ; defile of carriages along to sea ir the healthy and agreeable cool air ; and return to Alexandria at dusk, with the rays of the son extinguishing its last fires in to azure on the Mediterranean. This pyogranuloma resembles that BOO universally fain so along the Corniche road on the Riviera, till to-day unrivalled, and of which with little good will we can offer to our visitors a slight resembles. For we must also think of us., guests, who complain that there is nothing to keep them in Pale-dry, a commercial and wealthy city. but devoid of attractions, without promenades, or picturesque sites.
'The new scheme will meet all their objections, satisfying all desiderata. That is why, the augh stately know, it is receive 1 by all with variable enthusiasm. How could it be otherwise I Wo did not see bow it oil be ratified. Expense 1 Why the conditions offered are BOO advantageous at the present prices that it is a gilt to the city. Diane f We have already explained that this is no inconvenience, by an advantage, and the itinerary which we have just traced is more than sufficient .to show.
Moreover, it is necessary to go by l division. The heart of the city is shifting slightly but surely towards Rosetta Gate, gate of the sun of ancient Alexandria.
Let ns go there towards the sun-, the light, and enjoy alone the confirmed land holy plead still feebly—for walling is the only way its ancient bounds.
We must follow this example of the great cities of Europeans tend to develop this city and so, by extending it, increase it in riches and beauty. The present project to which we are likely to revert under, appears to as ideal. That is why we ask for its realization with the positive certainty of scouring such in a short delay.
The above scene is in our opinion an example of the opinions of our worthy local contemporary as to the many claims of the Siouf site for the new habit at of the Alexandria in an easterly direction is advancing so rapidly that there can be no onjections to the project on the score of its distance from Ramleh. The question of the transfer of the site must soon be settled one way or another, and we fail to see that the advantages of the Siouf scheme can be seriously called in question. In the opinion of all those competent to judge Siouf has all the conditions or an ideal race-course.

The Egyptian Gazette has much pleasure in presenting to its subscribers the accompanying description of some of the many interesting routes by which they may travel homewards. Great care has been taken to arrange thigs as accurately and concisely as possible, and it will be found that none of them we fraught with difficulty. In choosing the route home there are several things to be considered. To begin with there is the difference in climate between Egypt and the various points at which you may arrive in Europe.

This depends partly upon the month in j which you leave Egypt, for Cairo in January may be a little winner time the Riviera, amid ' possibly not so warm as Sicily, but in March it will be warmer than Rome, and more uniformly warm than ninny other places in Europe. Many people leave Egypt far-too early in the year, for as a rule the weather in April and May is perfect. The warmest place to go to on leaving Egypt is Sicily.
Some will want to take into consideration the number of days to be spent at sea, and we therefore subjoin a list showing the time occupied on each of the various routes between Egypt and the Continent of Europe.
The direct route to Sicily is by the Florio- Rubattino Co's steamers, which leave Alexandria weekly for MESSINA, where one takes train to TAORMINA, one of the most charming and popular places on the island. Giardini is the station at which to alight, and the drive up to Taormina is most delightful, occupying about the hour. In and around the town is much to interest the visitor. The theatre is of Greek origin, but restored under the Romans. CATANIA is the starting place for the ascent of Etna, and here also is a tine Cathedral. The Greek, Roman, and Saracenic remains that are found all over the island, are an endless source of pleasure. SYRACUSE has an interesting history, having been a Greek city, which was designed by Demosthenes in BC 413, and taken by the Romans in BC 212, when Archimedes was slain—his tomb is to be seen. The cathedral was once an ancient pagan temple. PALERMO, with about 300,000' inhabitants, is the capital of the Island, and enjoys a delightful climate. Much of interest is to be found in this fine city The Palazzo Reale is of Saracenic origin and close to it the church of S. Giovannia degli Erimiti with its picturesque cloisters. The Cathedral, Museum, Botanic Gardens, Villa Giulia and Royal Park are also worth a visit.
The fine steamers of the North German Lloyd leave Alexandria every Wednesday during the season for Naples, the voyage being only 3 days.
NAPLES is also reached in 10 hours from J Palermo by the Florio Rubattino Co.'s steamers, which leave daily. One cannot approach Naples or leave it without wishing to explore some of its islands, besides the lovely places j on its bay—Castellamare and Sorrento. The I small steamer that takes you to Sorrento [you can drive too] will take you on to Capri.
From Naples to ROME is a train journey of but five hours All who can will devote at least one week to visiting the many historical and interesting portions of the Eternal City, whose charms and beauties are too well-known to need comment here.
Leaving the Eternal City with much regret, a railway journey of live hours brings you to FLORENCE, where another week can well be spent admiring the City of Flowers and its surrounding country. In Florence itself the churches and galleries are of absorbing interest, whilst the local promenades and excursions should not he omitted. The Casein« is the most attractive and fashionable promenade in Florence, whilst the Vidale dri Colli, one of the finest walks in Europe, opened 35 years ago, goes winding up through the hit's a distance of four miles. The most delightful excursion outside Florence is that to Valtom- brusa, with its Monastery 3,300 feet, above the sea level. This is made first by ordinary train from Florence to St. Ellero, thence by cog wheel railway to Saltiiio. The ascent through groves of oaks takes an hour, and most striking panoramas are unfolded to view.
PISA is easily reached from Florence in about 2 hours ; here there is a line Cathedral and the Leaning Tower. A stay of at least one night should if possible be made in order to enjoy the view from the Campanile at sunset.
VIAREGGIO. Oho of the most delightful places on the Italian Riviera near Pisa and on the main line from Rome to Genoa. It is a ; very convenient half-way lions, between Egypt and England, and where living is reasonable and the air and surroundings exceptionally good.
GENOA (La Superba). — The most picturesque and interesting city in Italy, with the record of having one of the lowest death averages of European cities and a phenomenally equable temperature— warm in winter and deliciously cool breezes from the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean in summer.
The patriarchal home of Italy's most ancient nobility, whose palaces, gardens, and famous collections of statuary, frescoes and paintings, are a constant delight to thousands of travellers who annually sojourn in Genoa, Thun there are the Superbly decorated medieval churches containing exquisite marble columns and historical paintings, and the incomparable filled with its wonderful tombs.
From Genoa to Milan is a matter of only ' three hours by rail.
MILAN is a good centre for Northern Italy ' before making the tour of the Lakes. The, Cathedral is the principal attraction, with its beautiful windows illustrating the History of the Bible. The public gardens and the monumental cemetery are also worth a visit.
Between Bologna and Milan and only an hour and a half from Milan is SALSOMAGGIORE, a renowned health resort on account of its thermal springs, change trains at Borgo Sun Domino and in half an hour you are at Salsomaggiore.
A pleasantly situated village lying in the valley between Piacenza and Parma, rapidly becoming famous for its waters, which are very rich in bromine and iodine, and the richest in the world in lithium, strontium, and ichthyol, and have been successfully used in the treatment of regcrofula, rheumatism, tuberculosis affections, ladies' complaints, etc.

The steamers of the P. & O., North German Lloyd, Orient, and Messageries Maritimes are the largest. The Anchor, British India, Bibby and Henderson Lines are also excellent, and their steamers are largely patronised by travellers to Egypt.
As regards the train journeys from Cairo, the shortest is that to Alexandria, without change (3 hours). That to Port Said can now be made without change in 4 hours.
The least expensive way to England is by the Moss, Papayanni, Prince, and Westcott lines of steamers from Alexandria to Liverpool. The German Levant line has also good steamers from Alexandria to Hamburg.

The quickest through Continental routes are by P. & O. Brindisi express from Port Said, and the Austrian Lloyd Trieste-Vienna express from Alexandria.
THe quickest manner of getting to Europe from Port Said is undoubtedly by the fast Mail Steamers "Osiris: and "Isis" to Brindisi. One of these leaves Port Said every week, as soon as possible after recieving the Indian
and
The ITALIAN LAKES.
VENICE is a 5 hours' journey by rail from Milan, and one of the most delightful places imaginable to pass a quiet stay. The total absence of vehicular traffic strikes one as very strange; no horse, cart, carriage or bicycle is to be seen, and yet there is the sound of life at every turn. The approach the Venice from the Adriatic is unlike that of any other seaport. The town seems to be gradually, like Aphrodite, born of the sea, no hills behind, no stretches of rock, but first the tops of Campaniles appear above the horizon, then slowly the whole glittering town rises like a fairy mirage out of the calm lagoon.
Going northwards from Milan you make the tour of the beautiful Italian lakes.
Boats leave Como frequently for the other towns on the lake, which is very beautiful, and the scenery on either side going up the lake is most enchanting. - CERNOBBIO is a charming spot; then come Trenuszo; Cadenabhia, and Menaggio with the prettily-situated town of Bellaggio opposite. The walk from Tremezze along the shore of the lake to Menaggio is most enjoyable A steam tram rims from Maggit to Porlezza on Lake Lugano in three-quarters of an hour, then steamer to Lugano in two and three-quarter hours.
Switzerland, the heart of Europe, has been described as "A cluster of delights and grandeurs."
In and around the town the walks are charming, and the excursions to be made from Lucerne by boat, rail, etc., are very numerous
