The "Journal du Caire" states that a quarrel took place near Messrs. Walker & Meimarachi's establishment in Cairo on Monday between a European and a lacklege arbagi who did not relish the derisory sum of one piastre tariff presented him by his "fare." His protests were met by blows, other Europeans took the side of the aggressor, some natives intervened, and the party went together to the caracol. Here, according to our contemporary, the mamour refused to hear a word of the arbagi's defence or the testimony of an effendi who badly need the affair. The Europeans insulted the latter, who complained, but to no purpose, and the arbagi was declared to have committed a contravention.
If the story has been accurately given, it seems to us only justice that both the mamoor and the Europeans should hear more of the affair. The practice of "billing" cabmen is far too common now-a-days among persons who ought to know better. If the arbagi extorts large sums from tourists, two blacks do not made a white, and we fancy that these men often consider themselves justified in robbing tourist Peter to pay for resident Paul's short comings.

The following correspondence has passed between the directors of the Egyptian Delta Lard and Investment Company, Limited, and an important group of shareholders during the past few days -
1. To the Directors of the Egyptian Delta Land and Investment Co. Dear Sirs,-We, the undersigned shareholders of the Delta Land Company, holding 25,000 shares, beg to request that an informal meeting of the shareholders should be summoned to consider the advisability of transferring the administration of the company from London to Egypt. We are fully aware that according to the articles of association a formal meeting must be called in London, but we consider that a large proportion of the London board being now in Egypt, it would be showing deteranos to the shareholders' wishes were they given an opportunity of informing the board of their views regarding the administration of the company. Pailing the granting of our request, we beg to inform you that we propose taking the necəssary steps to have a meeting convened in London.
(Signatures follow). 2. Reply to the above :
The directors of the local section of the board sympathise with these shareholders, whereas the directors of the London section of the board present, while perfectly ready to discuss the subject with these shareholders individually, would desire that a general meeting, although informal, with them, be postponed until the arrival of the chairman.
which will be about the middle of January 3. Reply to above from shareholders' group :
Your letter has been shown to most of the shareholders who signed the requisition for IT an immediate meeting, and they request 08 to inform you that, taking into consideration your assurance that the board on the arrival of the chairman in Egypt will meet the shareholders at a meeting to be convened for that purpose not later than the middle of L January, they are prepared to defer further action till then.
Presiding at the meeting of the Khedivial Mail Steamship and Graving Dock Company It (Limited), Sir Auckland Colvin said the years had again given satisfactory results. The main interest of the year had been the addition to the fleet of a high-class steamer, which, although not actually placed on the service it during the currency of the year, was put into commission within two months of its expiry, tx and was running regularly. A further addition't to the capital was contemplated in order to enable them to make such replacements to as were necessary for the bettering of the service, and to strengthen the service on the Port Sadan line.
The prospects of the present year were satisfactory. The Mediterranean services cono tinued to furnish the company with results as good as they could expect, and the returns 8 from the other lines showed no domination. At present, owing to the provisions of the Companies Act 1900 it was not competent for b the company to pay & commission for the 'p underwriting or subscription of shares offered b to the public, but it was proposed to alter the articles in such a way as to authorise the payment of commission.
He intended visiting Egypt shortly in order to discuss various questions connected with the company's interests and to bring, if possible, to a close certain negotiations which 1 were now in course of consideration between the Egyptian authorities and the board.
Large andienos continue to patronize the performances being given by Cav. E. Guerra's "Compagnia Lirica Lillipuziani," and from the enthusiastic reception given to each diminative artiste, and the hearty applause accorded each chords, or fall of the curtain, it is certain that our juvenile entertainers have created already a very favourable impression on our rather critical playgoing community. On Monday the very pretty opera "Crispino e la Commare," by the Fratelli Riccio, was staged, and as in the previous productions, every member of the company was well op to his or her work, and secured a very pronounced 8000088, Master Ricciolini, in the title role, being particularly pleasing, both from a musical and dramatic point of view. This opera is to be staged this afternoon at 4 p.m. expressly for families unable to attend the evening performances.
On Tuesday evening we were to have bad a repetition of "La Soppambola," but in consequence of the sudden indisposition of Signorina Levi, this was withdrawn and Donizetti's "L'Elisir d'Amore" substituted, which, even at such short notice, was exceedingly well presented. The boys, however, took the palm on this occasion and soored continually. Indeed we doubt whether it would be possible to improve on the performances of several of the youngsters in the company.

The report of the directors, which is to be presented to the shareholders, at the seventh annual general meeting, to be held at the bead office of the company at Boulac on the 27th inst., states that the profit balance for the twelve months ending the 31st August, 1906, is L.B. 68,429.829 m/m, and the directors wish to remind the shareholders that this result is largely due to the wisdom and prevision of the late lamented chairman, Sir Elwin Palmer. The careful attention of the shareholders is drawn to the manner in which it is proposed, with their approval, to dispose of this amount. By the regulations of the company the first som to be distributed is eighteen thousand pounds sterling, or LE. 17,550, to the ordinary shares, being at the rate of 6% on the original ordi- be nary share capital and representing 4 % on the actual ordinary capital ; of the remaining L.E. 50,879.829 m/s, five per cent., equal to L.B. 2,543.991, is due to the deferred shareholders. After the payment of these two statutory dividends there remains a sum of L.E. 48,335.888 m/m out of which the directors propose to distribute £15,750, representing a farther 81% on the total ordinary capital. The same to be thas paid in dividends will be :

The directors propose the carrying forward of this large som for two reasons, firstly because they consider it necessary to make ample provision against the possible continuation of the present competition in the salt trade, and secondly because they intend, at the forthcoming extra-ordinary general meeting to propose the cancelling of the deferred shares and the payment of the necessary compensation ont of the profits carried forward. The directors are glad to be able to anno DOE that the Government has agreed to prolong to twenty years the period during which the whole of the Government beliefs are to be held by the company, but at the same time they desire to call the serious attention of the shareholders i to the active competition in the salt trade above referred to. In the early years of the company's existence the only profitable portion of its enterprises was the exploitation of the salt monopoly, and the Board elected by the shareholders in 1904, realising the weakness of soch a position, has always had as its primary policy the development of the other 4 branches of the company's business. That this policy has been justified is shown by this year's balance sheet, but the advantage so far gained must be closely followed up, and the situation cannot be considered as entirely satisfactory until the company's salt trade can, if necessary, be looked on as a subsidiary portion of a highly developed whole. It is with the purpose of carrying out more tally this necessary development that the Directors will propose at the extraordinary general meeting the increase of the capital of the company by the issue of 50,000 ordinary shares of £1 each

Among the latest arrivals at the Hotel d'Angleterre, Cairo, is Lord Halsbury, who, accompanied by the Countess, intends to spend Christmas in Egypt in order to take & short respite from his laborers on the codification of the laws of the England. What a wonderful man the Earl is! Active, bale and beauty, and yet his years number one and eighty. Three times has he been Lord Chancellor, "from 1885 86, reappointed from 1886-92, and then after an interval of three years he spent another uninterrupted decade in that high office. His service as Lord Chancellor was indeed enough to justify any man in giving up active work and passing the rest of his time in quietness. Bat Lord Halsbary evidently intends to spend the whole of his life in harness.
It is impossible to think of Lord Halsbury as eighty years old, so vigorous is his step, so alert his mind, and so merry the twinkle in his eye. To visit the Law Courts on one of the rare occasions when he presided in the Court of Appeal was an instruction and a delight. Talkative and inquisitive, be insisted on having his share in every discussion, however intricate was the point of law, and however profound the erudition of the man who was laying it down. The best caricatures of bim have always been those which most pearly approached the true likeness. A squat little man with a wide smiling mouth, strong capable jaw, a friendly nose, and a wig which almost invariably sat askew.
Other arrivals at this hotel include Lord Halsbury's son, Viscount Tiverton, and Lady Evelyn and Mr. E. W. Giffard, Dr. T. D. and Mrs. Acland, Master Acland, Mise Grill, Miss Carey, Mr. and Mrs. J. Cousen, Mr. and Mrs. H. B. Loomis, Capt. R. T. Dizon, Capt. Ed. T. Dixon, Mr. James Hewat.

Lord Rosslyn does not intend to make a long stay in Egypt, as be is op a toar round the world. He expects to be in Canads early in the spring to flat his Nova Scotia collieries.

The newspapers are adopting an alarmist tone respecting the Rosso-Japanese negotiations, and some are even demanding that the country should resort to war rather than yield even to the Japanese demands regarding the fishery and coasting rights. It is not believed, however, that there is anything in dispute which cannot be solved by negotiations or arbitration. (R.)
m The "North German Gazette" strongly denies the reports of the so-called violent telegram from the Emperor to Prince von Bulow on the pl subject of the dissolution of the Reichstag. The dissolution is not a personal act of the Emperor's, but a decision arrived at by the Government's confederates based on the constitution of the country. The Emperor bas merely con los fined himself to ratifying their decision.
All rumours on the subject of the aggressive attitude taken op by His Majesty are pare speculation. The dissolution is a constitutional proceeding. an appeal on the part of the Government to the people against the anti-It patriotic decision which an important section of the Reichstag wished to impose on the Government.

NIMR ON KAMEL.
I was delighted, says Mr. Stead in the latest "Review of Reviews," to welcome to my office recently Dr. Faris Nimr, the editor of the "Mokattam," the well-known Cairo newspaper, whom I have not seen since the Paris Exhibition. Dr. Faria Nimr was at one time Professor at the Amerioan College at Beyront, but twenty years ago be was attracted to Egypt by the prospect of greater liberty which British occupation had secured in that country. Dr. Nimr is a man of great intelligence and public spirit, his children are being educated in England, and I was glad to have an opportunity of asking him as to the truth of recent alarming statements as' to impending trouble in Egypt.
"There is no impending trouble in Egypt, unless you manufacture it yourself in England, and import it there. I am glad to have the opportunity of talking the matter over with you because you yourself in the 'Review of Reviews Have been exploited in the interest of disorder."
"In what way?" I asked.
"You remember writing a few lines concerning Lord Cromer, saying that he had been in Egypt so long, that he was getting ap in years, and that it might be well if there was a change. These lines were immediately seized upon as affording a justification for the assertions made in certain quarters, and it only required & a little more agitation in Egypt to secure the recall of Lord Cromer."
"Therein," I said, "your agitators exactly misstated the truth. The more trouble there is in Egypt, the more important it will appear to every Englishman not to recall Lord Cromer."
"There you have been quite right. Never since the days of Joseph h28 Egypt had a raler so just as Lord Cromer. His word has become almost a synonym for justice. It is because be is just that the present agitation against him has spread. Egypt bas prospered immensely sinop the days of the British occupation; the value of land has risen enormously, and when the irrigation schemes are complete it will rise still more. It is precisely this growing wealth of Egypt that constitutes our danger. There are multitudes of greedy and rapacions valadares, both in Egypt and in other countries, whose mouths are watering for the opportunity of plandering our country. Between these vultures and the Egyptian stands Lord Cromer, and as long as he stands there the vultures will be foiled.
"What about Mustapha Kamel Pasha, who came here this summer and made a great fuss in certain quarters, representing himself as the spokesman of the oppressed Egyptian ?"
Dr. Nimr smiled. "I prefer not to speak about that gentleman. He has thriven by making people talk about him. In himself a cipher, the notice which you take of him is what alone gives him his importance."
"Do you not think that Mustapha is a dangerous man ?"
"No, there is not enough in him to be dangerous, accepting what you put in him. The man himself is as nothing. He works for the Torkish Camarilla at Constantinople, and he can command subsidies which enable him to carry on an agitation. As for his plea that he is the spokesman of the Egyptians, or that he is faithful to the programme of Egypt for the Egyptians, that is all nonsense-he is for Egypt for the Tarke ; and the proof of that is supplied by the fact that when the Turks claimed Egyptian territory, and attempted to annex Sinai, this pseudo-patriot could not find words sufficiently strong with which to denounce everyone who opposed the Turkish attempt to dismember Egypt. No, no one can pretend to believe that Mustapha Kamel Pasha is a real Egyptian."
"What are his origins ?" I asked.
"He was a clever boy in Paris when he attracted the attention of M. Deloncle, who was then the soul of the Colonial Party in Egypt, which was at that time bathing all mander of mischief against England, including the Marchand expedition to Pashoda, Mustaphs Kamel used to work in cooperation with | Deloncle, and then posed as the eloquent Egyptian patriot. All the while be was acting in the interest of France. When France grew tired of him, Mustapha transferred his activity to Constantinople, where be became the partisan of tbe group which was very hostile to the Britisb influence in Constantinople. He afterwards endeavoured to find support in Berlin, but be met with little success. This year he took part in the Denshawai incident, in order to support the agitation against England in the heart of its own capital Bat you need not take him seriously; he is only important so far as you have made him so, and so long as you treat him as a serious proposition."
"A DREAM OF EGYPT."
The Marquise de Morny and Mme. Colette Villy, whose resolution to go upon the musiowall stage was recently announced, have now signed an engagement with the manager of the Modlin Rouge, to appear at that establishment na play without words, a pantomime written especially for them by "Willy," husband of Mme. Colette Willy, and the Marquise de Mordy, entitled "A Dream of Egypt." The first! mebeareal of this pantomime, the music for which has been written by that clever musician M. Mathé, took place (the "Globe" corresponDent states) at the residence of the Marobioness
few days ago. The idea running through the play is this: A savant who possess among his artistic treasures a sarcophagus containing an Egyptian female mommy dreams that he has the power to resurrect the Head Egyptian and vitalise her back to life. Sleeping and waking the thought is ever with him ; much wisdom has made him mad; and when, in an ancient volume rich in the witchery of the alchemists, be finds the secret be has sought for, his mind is soon made op. He will try his power upon the long-inanimate daughter of the Pharaohs. To the vagae, pulsating strains of & sensuous indentation the Professor, with a couple of swords which he has taken from the wall, makes & series of passes before the rigid form of the mommy. At first there is no sign, no glimmer of response, but as the subtle potes of incantation are continued and the swords glitter before the sarcophagus, there is an almost imperceptible movement, and gradually the eyes that have been closed for centuries, the eyes whose last vision was of the Nile and the Pyramide, reopen in the most modern capital of Europe. The savant, startled at the apparition, draws back from the reviving figure, and the Egyptian maiden, roasted to life and sensation, step slowly from the sarcophagus in which she h98 been imprisoned for thousands of years. Then a muslin veil falls from her face, and she looks about her, amazed and wondering at her strange surroundings. A mirror is in her hand, and with an instinctive movement she raises it to her face. The sight of her features disturbs her, and she glanced quickly round her. Suddenly she S.S. the savant standing at his table. Advancing quickly she scrutinises him with piercing eyes. He offers the curious creature a cigarette, but she turns away quickly in a gesture of refusal. The Professor strikes & matoh and lights the cigarette, and as the smoke rises to the ceiling the beautiful young Egyptian follows it entranced. Evidently the filmy clouds recall the incense of a far-off time, and as she watches them her body sways in rhythmic measure to the tuneful masio of the play. Bot at this jonotare the fincée of the | Professor comes into the room, and that means
trouble for him. However, everything ends Satisfactorily, as it should do in & well-constructed pantomime, and at the close of the play we have nothing but admiration for all concerned in it.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE "EGYPTIAN GAZETTE."
Sir,- The crisis in France is entering upon an acute phase. It is no longer a question of schism between the Republic and the Vatican, bat an impending change, long foretold, in the complexion of France's foreign policy. The recent decision to laïcise French education in the East means that France is no longer the Protectress of Roman Catholicism there. It is a fatal policy. For Germany with her good relations with Turkey and her large proportion of Roman Catholics, numbering 20,327,913, or 86.1 percent of the total population, is quite ready to fulfil Bismarok's dream of a German Roman Catholio Protectorate in the East. By this rash sot, France is likely to take & back seat in Near Erstern politics. Laïoisation may tend to th: nationalisation of French schools, but it is the koell of French's prestige 89 a Roman Catholio Protectors. The attitude of the Vatican is appertain. Will it accept the ægis of a Protestant Emperor, or in its bour of trial, lean towards reconciliation with the Qairita Time will show.

The Money Market.
Money scares, have not been wanting this week, and so long as London is the only free market for gold, other countries will take advantage of this faot and depude as, of thi: precious commodity, even as they make age of our free trade to dump their gorillas manufacturers, for which, of course, gold is taken in exchange. It is a matter for congratulation that during the past year the Bank directors seem for the first time to have had the plack to assert themselves, and decline to be entirely & tool for the use of others. They have not hesitated to throw every obstacle in the way of preventing America financing Wall Street from London. This is quite as much to America's advantage as our own, for, as Mr. Shaw admits, to disturb the European market is to bring injury upon Americans themselves.
Meanwhile, although there appears to be no cause for any real uneasiness, and the Bank statement reflects quite & normal state of things at this time of year, still a hesitating tendency remains predominant, and both money and stocks act and react spasmodically.
The Bank statement this week shows & continued outflow of gold to the country, and, consequently, although £275,000 was received on balance from abroad, the stock of balloon has been repoed £102,800, the total reserve being lower by £194,000. A large net reduction in the deposits has, however, caused the proportion to liabilities to rise 24 to 47 per cent.
Market rates have fluctuated between 41 and 67 per cent. according to the varying moods of the banks, which are no doubt reaping a good harvest. The Stock Markets.
With the adjustment of the account in progress, and the Christmas holidays looming before them, members of the Stock Exchange were quite prepared for a more or less idle week. consequently, although the amount of business for the new account actually trans, acted has not been large, the very firm tone maintained by markets in general ap to yester, day was an agreeable surprise. It is certainly to be accepted as further evidence of the more serious feeling which is now permeating all sections of the House. There is still very much lee way to make up, and it will be a long time before, we actually return to the active state of business which was the feature of the stock markets before the South African war, but a steady if slow improvement has been noticeable for some time, and everything points towards a much brighter era in the New Year.
A very satisfactory factor in the situation is the promised early settlement of the Transyaal. Although the new Constitution may not be all that could be desired from the mining point of view, it is recognised as being quite se good as W88 expected from & Government BO unsympathetic to the industry. But the most important point, judging from the general standpoint of investment business, is that, at any rate, a definite understanding as to the future must do much to dispel the doubter uncertainty which have been such a deplorable theatre of Stock Exchange movements for some considerable time past.
Opinion in the City, though not altogether favorable to the new proposals, is anything bat hostile, and the best opinion iç that in the period that will elapse before Chinese labour will be determined, the whole labour question can be carefully reviewed and placed upon & substantial basis.
Daring the past twelve months South Afrigan mining shares have touched the lowest point of despondency, and even now it must be admitted that a fairly considerable period most elapse before confidence is restored, but the tarn in the tide has-some, and that gives 08 use for optimism.
To-day money considerations have dominated the markets, and the tendency has in the main been opfBronrable. Consols.
The assistance given to the American money market by Mr. Shaw, the Secretary to the Treasury, brightened the gilt-edged market, and Console advanced to, bat the spread of pessimistic views regarding the monetary outlook consequent on a rather heavy withdrawal for South America Osused a reaction, and Consols eased off to 865 for the account. To night they close at 863 for the account. Forolgn Bonds.
Movements in the international market have been pointeresting, and the tone now is weak and irregular. Japanese have been very doll, and nearly all the stocks are lower. Rosniane, after maintaining a steady tone during the greater part of the week, have now fallen away, and the shorif yesterday went back to 5 discount, while the Fgursraoeded to 77. The quotations to-night are 5; discount and 775. Home Ralis,
There was again some tendency to realise in home railway shares at the beginning of the week, but the publication of a very gratifying batch of traffic returns gave strength to the market. Yesterday, however, the realisations were renewed, and several of the stooks relapsed. To day bume rails have been dull, but quotations are well maintained.
Dividend prospects are now attracting attention, and these certainly must be very satisface tory to shareholders. In nearly all the responses substantial increases in traffic have been wounded, and by the end of the year there should be an excellent showing, for, notwithstanding the wretched weather, the 'Xmas excursion traffic is expected to be large owing to the prosperous condition of trade.
For the half-year to date the North Eastern for instance, have an imortgage amounting to £251,877, while the Great Western and the London and South Western are respectively £186,500 and £195,000 to the good then come the Lancashire and Yorkshire with a gain of £92,869, the Midland with £68,751, and the Great Northern with £45,197. The significance of these figures will be realised when read in conjunction with the previous, gratifying half-yearly reports. Americans.
The American section felt considerable relief when it was announçed that Mr. Shaw had decided to assist the market to the extent of 20,000,000 dollars, and the tone became very ballisb, Pacifics, Milwaukees, and other high priced shares receiving considerable support. Cangdion Pagifius alleged 5t op on Tuesday, or twelve dollars higher than a week previously. Profit-taking followed on Wednesday, and since then the market has been weak. Milwaukees, after being as high as-1951. gave way 1 yesterday, Unions 2, and Canadian Pacifios 13.
Americans opened weak today , but this afternoon the tone became firmer, and towards the close considerable business was done in some of the shares., Milwaukee jumped to 203. Unions close 1904. and Canadian Pa office 202. Egyptians.
The publication of the reports of the Corporation of Western Egypt, the Salt and Soda Company, and the Khedivial Mail Steamship Company coming in the same week as the important issue of the United Egyptian Lande Company, have caused Egyptian enterprises to occupy a prominent place in financial cirolse during the past few days.
The testare of the week, of course, has been the issue of the capital of the United Egyptian Lands, Ltd., which has been, in spite of illnatpred attacks, a marked spoon. A very large amount was subscribed here, much more than was originally intended for this market, and the directors decided to slot in fallen London. As there seems to be no doubt as to the good faith and the prospects of the company, this is quite satisfactory from the point of view of the members of the London Stock Exchange, who if they are to make a market in Egyptian societies at all, must have an adequate number of shares placed in this market, though this is not goite, as Agreeable to many intending investors in Egypt.
The shares were noted at a substantial premium, but the action of the directors brought in some sellers from Egypt, and the premium has now disappeared. It will be interesting to see which market eventually gets the bulk of the shares. Meanwhile they are very well spoken of in the best quarters.
In the Egyptian market the tone has not been bu satisfactory this week There have been considerable fluctuations, but very little
business has taken place. The Khedivial Mail report showing a falling-off in the profits from £77,000 to £48,000 does not appear to have had mach effect upon the shares. The ordinary are rather easier at 15-2, but the preference are better at 44. The publication of the Corporation of Western Egypt's report has left the shares at 1. Salt and Soda also are quiet at 17. , National Bank of Egypt were ap to 28 ) early this morning, bat baye sinea fallen to 28 ts sellers, They close, firia, however, at 28 bid. Agricultural Bank are easier at SH the 3 1 per cent bonds being anobanged at about 89. A considerable businesshas been done in Daira Sapieh, and the price advanced to 17 bid, but olose 176-1 Delta Preference Bearer are dowa 12 }, and Delta Land and Investment are easier at 4 8. Bank of Rɔnmapia are in request on Ahe dividend of 68, and have changed hands at 91 to-day. i Beyptian Estates are quiet at 2 bathe Defarred at 18-19. Union Fonojène are fietter at 6), while Land Benk are: nominally 88. Abyssinia Benki close 1 .discount. Mining.
From the firm tone prevalent in the South African mining market, it is quite evident that the new Constitution had been folly discounted some time ago. As a matter of fao', it was recognised when the Liberals came into power they would inevitably carry oat their threats to terminate Chinese Isboar on the Rand, hence the market had made up its mind on this point. It is suggested that in the interval which must elapse before this odiot is carried out much oan be done to solve the difficulty thas enused, by the introdaotion of labour-saving machinery, and if ramoor be correct, certain mashinery has already besti invented that will considerably assist the mine owbere in this respect.
Yesterday the Kaffir section displayed more activity than for some time past, and prices steadily advanced. Paris came in & amall boyer, bat in the main the strong appearance of the market was dae to re-porobuse by looal apeeglators, bears who have no longer anything to go for. | Koffiers have again received a fair amount of attention to day, thongh there has been some irregolarity. Rand Mipes close at 6te and East Rande at 4 1/32.
Shares in the Egyptian mining section are qoie, and sopport is still largely witbbold, bat a general improvement in other mining shares I will, it is expected, give a welcome fillip to
Egyptian descriptions. Nile Valleye bave been a better market, and the price has recovered to 5s, 6d. as against 48 last Friday. Egyptian Options, however, diogped yesterday, and are now. Egyptian Mines are 8d. better at 3/9.

"The Egyptian Gazette" series is the most artistic collection to be found in Egypt
"The Egyptian Gazette" Series is the most artistic collection to be found in Egypt.
The Egyptian Gazette has much pleasure in presenting to its subscribers the accompanying description of some of the many interesting routes by which they may travel homewards. Great care has been taken to arrange them as accurately and concisely as possible, and it will be found that none of them are fraught with difficulty. In choosing the route home there are several things to be considered. To begin with there is the difference in climate between Egypt and the various points at which you may arrive in Europe.
This depends partly upon the month in which you leave Egypt, for Cairo in January may be a little warmer than the Riviera, and possibly not so warm as Sicily, but in March it will be warmer than Rome, and more uniformly warm than many other places in Europe. Many people leave Egypt far too early in the year, for as a rule the weather in April and May is perfect. The warmest place to go to on leaving Egypt is Sicily.
Some will want to take into consideration the number of days to be spent at sea, and we therefore subjoin a list showing the time occupied on each of the various routes between Egypt and the Continent of Europe.
They are as follows:-
The long sea routes—from Port Said or Alexandria to Plymouth, Southhampton, London or Liverpool—occupy about 4 days. The short ones are as follows:—
The steamers, of the P.&O. North German Lloyd, Orient and Messageriea Maritimes are the largest. The Anchor, British India, and Bibby Lines are also excellent, and their steamers are largely patronised by travellers to Egypt.
As regards the train journeys from Cairo, the shortest is that to Alexandria, without change (3 hours). That to Port Said, can now be made without change in 4 1/2 hours.
The least expensive way to England is by the Moss, Papayanni, Prince, and Westcott lines of steamers from Alexandria to Liverpool. The German Levant line has also good steamers from Alexandria to Hamburg.
The most expensive but quickest through Continental routes are by P.&O. Brindisi express from Port Said, and the Austrian Lloyd Trieste Vienna express from Alexandria.
As regards heavy luggage, it must be borne in mind that very little luggage is allowed free on the railways of Europe, but there are several good and responsible forwarding agents in Egypt who undertake at a fixed charge to deliver packages to any address in Europe.
The quickest manner of getting to Europe from Port Said is undoubtedly by the
fast Mail Steamers "Osiris" and "Isis" to Brindisi. One of these leaves port
Said every week, as soon as possible after receiving the Indian
These small but comfortable ships have enormously powerful engines, and attain a very high rate of speed. They are called the "Ferry Boats" having been specially built to carry the British mail from Port Said to Brindisi. If you are going straight through to England you will find the train waiting at Brindisi which will take you to Calais without changing. It has complete arrangements for sleeping and eating on board, and you should arrive in London on the fifth day from leaving Port Said.

The direct route to Sicily is by the Florio-Rubattino Co.'s steamers which leave Alexandria weekly for MESSINA, where one takes train to TAORMENA, one of the most charming and popular places on the island. Giardini is the station at which to alight, and the drive up to Taormina is most delightful, occupying about one hour. In and around the town is much to interest the visitor. The theatre is of Greek origin, but restored under the Romans. CATANIA is the starting place for the ascent of Etna and here also is a fine Cathedral. The Greek, Roman, and Saracenic remains that are found all over the island, are an endless sources of pleasure. SYRACUSE has an interesting history, having been a Greek city, which was designed by Demosthenes in B.C. 413, and taken by the Romans in B.C. 212, when Archimedes was slain—his tomb is to be seen. The cathedral was once an ancient pagan temple. PALERMO, with about 300,000 inhabitants, is the capital of the Island, and enjoys a delightful climate. Much of interest is to be found in this fine city. The Palazzo Reale is of Saracenic origin and close to it the church of S. Giovannia degli Eremiti with its picturesque cloisters. The Cathedral, Museum, Botanic Gardens, Villa Giulia and Royal Park are also worth a visit.
The fine steamers of the North German Lloyd leave Alexandria every Wednesday during the season for Naples, the voyage being only 3 days.
NAPLES is also reached in 10 hours from Palermo by the Florio-Rubattino Co.'s steamers, which leave daily. One cannot approach Naples or leave it without wishing to explore some of its islands, besides the lovely places on its bay—Castellamare and Sorrento. The small steamer that takes you to Sorrento [you can drive too] will take you on to Capri.
From Naples to ROME is a train journey of but five hours. All who can will devote at least one week to visiting the many historical and interesting portions of the Eternal City, whose charms and beauties are too well-known to need comment here.
Leaving the Eternal City with much regret, a railway journey of five hours brings you to FLORENCE, where another week can well be spent admiring the City of Flowers and its surrounding country. In Florence itself the churches and galleries are of absorbing interest, whilst the local promenades and excursions should not be omitted. The Cascine is the most attractive and fashionable promenade in Florence, whilst the Viale dei Colli, one of the finest walks in Europe, opened 35 years ago, goes winding up through the hills a distance of four miles. The most delightful excursion outside Florence is that to Vallombrosa, with its Monastery 3,300 feet above the sea level. This is made first by ordinary train from Florence to St. Ellero, thence by cog-wheel railway to Saltino. The ascent through groves of oaks takes an hour, and most striking panoramas are unfolded to view.
PISA is easily reached from Florence in about 2 hours ; hero there is a fine Cathedral and the Leaning Tower. A stay of at least one night should if possible be made in order to enjoy the view from the Campanile at sunset.
VIAREGGIO. One of the most delightful places on the Italian Riviera near Pisa and on the main line from Rome to Genoa. It is a very convenient half-way house between Egypt and England, and where living is reasonable and the air and surroundings exceptionally good.
GENOA (La Superba).—The most picturesque and interesting city in Italy, with the record of having one of the lowest death averages of European cities and a phenomenally equable temperature—warm in winter and deliciously cool breezes from the surrounding mountains and the Mediterranean in summer.
The patriarchal home of Italy's most ancient nobility, whose palaces, gardens, and famous collections of statuary, frescoes, and paintings, are a constant delight to thousands of travellers who annually sojourn in Genoa. Then there are the superbly decorated medieval churches containing exquisite marble columns and historical paintings, and the incomparable Campo Santo filled with its wonderful tombs.
From Genoa to Milan is a matter of only three hours by rail.
MILAN is a good centre for Northern Italy before making the tour of the Lakes. The Cathedral is the principal attraction, with its beautiful windows illustrating the History of the Bible. The public gardens and the monumental cemetery are also worth a visit.
Between Bologna and Milan and only an hour and a half from Milan is SALSOMAGGIORE, a renowned health resort on account of its thermal springs, change trains at Borgo San Donino and in half-an-hour you are at Salsomaggiore.

GRAND HOTEL DE PARIS
VENICE is a 5 hours journey by rail from Milan, and one of the most delightful places imaginable to pass a quiet stay. The total absence of vehicular traffic strikes one as very strange ; no horse, cart, carriage or bicycle is to be seen, and yet there is the sound of life at every turn. The approach to Venice from the Adriatic is unlike that of any other sea port. The town seems to be gradually, like Aphrodite, born of the sea, no hills behind, no stretches of rock, but first the tops of Campaniles appear above the horizon, then slowly the whole glittering town rises like a fairy mirage out of the calm lagoon.
Going northwards from Milan you make the tour of the beautiful Italian lakes.
COMO, the birthplace of the younger Pliny, is reached in one-and-a-quarter hours by train by way of Monza :
Boats leave Como frequently for the other towns on the lake, which is very beautiful, and the scenery on either side going up the lake is most enchanting. CERNOBBIO is a charming spot; then come Tremezzo, Cadenabbia, and Menaggio with the prettily-situated town of Bellaggio opposite. The walk from Tremezzo along the shore of the lake to Menaggio is most enjoyable. A steam tram runs from Menaggio to Porlezza on Lake Lugano in three-quarters of an hour, then steamer to Lugano in two-and-three-quarter hours.
Switzerland, the heart of Europe, has been described as "A cluster of delights and grandeurs."
LUGANO is some 20 miles from Como and reached by train in one-and-a-half hours. It has a population of 10,000 people and is charmingly situated on the Lake of Lugano, amidst lovely Italian scenery. Around it rise M. San Salvatore, M. de Caprino.and M. Generoso.
LOCARNO, may be reached by rail from Bellinzona in forty minutes. This pretty town, situated at the top of lake Maggiore has a mild climate and is an excellent winter resort. The church Madonna del Sasso, situated above the town, is worth a visit, as it contains interesting paintings, "Entombment," by Ciseri, and 'Tho Flight into Egypt," by Bramantion.
LUCERNE—A striking picture on the Lake of Lucerne facing the Rigi and Pilatus and the snow-clad Alps.
In and around the town the walks are charming, and the excursions to be made from Lucerne by boat, rail, etc., are very numerous.
The Lake of Lucerne abounds in delightful excursions, those to the Rigi, Pilatus, Burgenstock and Sonnenberg needing a special visit each. Other excursions on the lake can be made by steamer, and the ever-changing scenery on the trip from Lucerne, to Fluelen is a source of delight to the lover of nature.
BRUNNEN, charmingly situated on the most beautiful part of the Lake of Lucerne, commands magnificent views of lake and mountain scenery. Along the Lake of Uri from Brunnen to Fluelen runs the famous Axentrasse
A delightful exeption from Lucerne is that to ENGELBERG. Take boat to Stansstad and from Stansstad it is about 1 hour and 40 min. by Electric Railway, with delightful scenery en route. The ascent of Titlis, is made from here, and the panoramic view of the Alps is grand; extending from Monte Rosa to the Black Forest, and from the Santis to the Matterhorn.
THE BERNESE OBERHAND.-INTERLAKEN a favourite summer resort and the best centre for making excursions in the Oberland, abounding in fine walks and views. There is a magnificent view of the Jungfrau from the Hoheweg, a fine avenue of walnut trees the chief resort of visitors. Interlaken is also not far from the famous waterfalls, Giessbach, Trummelbath and Staubbach. Then also the glaciers of Grindelwald and view from Murren and the Schynige Platte are sights not to be missed.
CHATEAU D'OEX. 3,500 ft above the sea on the new Electric Railway between Montreux and Interlaken, surrounded by magnificent scenery, with pure dry air. Much frequented by English people in Summer and Winter.
Many people visit Greece after wintering in Egypt, as it is so easily reached from Alexandria ; the climate in April is charming. The best steamers are those of the Khedivial Mail Co. and the Russian Steam Navigation Co.
If possible tourists should arrange to be in Athens for the Orthodox Easter in order to witness the Good Friday and Easter Eve ceremonies, and to be present at the dancing on the Easter Tuesday festival held at Megara for which a special train is run from Athens.
It is worth while to spend a few days in CORFU on account of the beauty of the scenery. There is also good snipe and quail shooting to be had.
Best Spring resort. 2,200 ft. above the sea. Every comfort.
The leading Hotel for English and American families. Trains every fifteen minutes by Electric Railway from Brunnen to Axen-Fels. The Park having a frontage of nearly a mile on the lake, is one of the prettiest in Switzerland.
World-wide reputation.
