We have now reached the season when met of us who have the time and inolidation for Ben bathing are thinking of enjoying a dip in the ses. Many who do not indalge in this health giving practice would no doubt join the ranks of thore who do, were they satisfied that they cald do to without risk, and that they are justified in hesitating is amply proved by the sed list of bathing fatalities last year, What preosations the authorities have taken to prevent as far as posrible a repetition of these uu.ppy.occarreu cos during this som mer we do not know, but we would orgo that the mere provision of a few life belts announoed last year is far from being equal to the needs of the situation. Boats are an arge: t necessity, and should be provided at certain selected spots along the Ramleb coast at fixed hoors daily. The proprietors of all ba hy along the coast sboald also be compelled to bava boats in attendance and such other measures be taken as will ensure as far as possible the safety of bathers willing to comply with the regulations laid down.
Now that the new sea wall is completed we hope it will not be long before the Municipality erects poblic swimming baths on the quay. A little enterprise on tbe part of the Alexandria Swimming Club is wanted in this direction, the inconvenience of being restricted to the poor accommodation offered them by a dock as the only possible place in which tt eir annual matches san take place being greatly felt. A commodious swimming bath on the now quay would be a real boon to this c'ab sad enable it greatly to add to the number of its members. Too much is left to private enterprise in these matters, bat it will to nothing short of disgrace to the city of Alexandria if it is left to the promotors of a pier, or some soch body, to provide one of the most argently Deeded requirements of the oit zone.
The cost of two or more floating baths in front of the ses wall would be a mere trifle, and in no way interfere with the view from the osplanade, and even if the citizens failed for a time fally to appreciate the opportunities I given them for the health-giving exercise of swimming, no long time would, we feel con. vinced, elapse before the number of batha would have to be increased. Judging by the number of natives to be seen taking ses baths along the coast, the native popolation of the oity would highly appreciate a renewal of the opportnnities, of which the rootion of the wall deprived them, and one bath could well be rezerved for their exclusive nae. It is, of course, too late for anything to be done in time for the present sommer, but we trust that another year will not pass without something being done and that 1907 will witness a much improved state of affairs.
Bat no delay sbould take place in providing against such a loss of life took place last year. Venturesome spirits there will always be who refuse to be bound by regulations and take risks more or less hazardous. No meagares need be taken to provide for their safety, bat it is for the bather who would be cautions and ran no annecessary risk that we plead. At present be is without gaidance as to spots where carrenta ran that may at any moment unexpectedly sweep him off his feet and carry him out of his depth ; and be the responsibility for his protection at the door of Municipality, Goa vernorat, or Coast Guard-We presome it lies with one of these three sathorities--9 contend that it should not be shirked. Ifs death-roll from bathing cannot be altogether avoided, at least it can be greatly minimised by proper precautions, and it was clearly proved in more than one case last year that life could easily have been saved bad. bost been at band. For the credit of humanity we hope that this season no such reprosch will be possible. Barely it will not be necessary to establish 3 Humane Society to carry out daties that could so easily be undertaken by thoan responsible for the good government of the land.
A cable was received by the British South Africs Company last week stating that the railway reached Broken Hill on the 10th inat. This point is 374 miles from the Victoria Falls and 1,016 miles from Cape Town, and its completion constitutes a fartber step towards the fa fila.spt of Mr. Rhodes's great echeme. On July 1, 1905, the Tarther extension was commencer, and the 281 miles from Kalomo to Broken Hill were con. atracted in 346 days. An American contemporary says: Among the "openings for British trade" mentioned by the British Vice Consul at Alexandria in his report for the year 1905 we find the fact that "one cannot find an egg cup small enough for the Egyptian egg." The true remedy for that, surely, is to get Lord Cromer to torn his attention to Egyptian egg, and do for them what he has done for Egypt's prosperity and credit.
We should like to oall the attention of our readors to the case of two French ladies of Alexandria why, having suddenly lost their entire capital and being in delicate health, are entirely destitute and for the time being incapable of earning a livelihood. We have enquired into their case, and from the in formation we have received, notably from the head of the Couvent des Enfants Trouvés, we can testify that they are eminently deserving of support. Any donations will be gratefully received and acknowledged by the Editor of the "Bgyptisn Gazette."

Herbert,
CONSTANTINOPLE, Jone so. The Persian Ambassador bas complained to the Porte regarding the forther despatch of troops and monitions to the frontier, ondangering the relations existing between the two countries.
From enquiries made by the London correspondent of the "Manchester Guardian" it was believed that the boundary dispute between ha Turkey and Persia was in a fair way to be settled da quietly. The trouble really is that the boundary J has never been defined. British surveyors about half a century ago mapped the boondary zone" (and a huge affair the mapping was, running to lo * bundred or more sheets), but it is only a lin map of the territory through which the boundary is assumed to run, no line being demarcated It is easy to see how there could be perpetual differences of opinion, the immediate cause now being the occupation by Tarkey of Vassova and some Abor villages which, in the opinion of the British Foreign Office, lie distinctly in the Persian part of the "boundary zone." /The Persians, with a view to establishing a joint inquiry, organised a Frontier Commigsion, and pressed the Tarkish Government on their side to do the same. Thip, however, the Porto refused to do. The Sultan Also refused to recognise the arbitration of Great | Britain, which Persia was quite ready to accept. It now appears, however, that the Soltan has reconsidered his position, and is wi willing for a Turkish Commission to join the Persian Commission already on the spot. If BO, tha mape may come to contain something more useful than'a "zone."
There is a sequel to the murder of Radvan Paobs which in any other country but Turkey would oreate a terrible sensation. Abdull Rezek, ex-Chamberlain of the Sultan, and Ali Sohamyl, ex-Governor of Soutari, stand condemned to death as instigators of the crime, and the Court of Cassation has confirmed the Bentence. As the two condemned officers were not the actaal murderare, but the procurers of the murder, there still remained strong hope of the Soltan's clemency, but Abdul Rozuk bas, it is alleged, entirely closed that avenue of osoape to himself and his accomplice by for mally declaring that in getting Redva put to death they acted on the command of the sal tan. He and his companion will pay for the assertion with their heads if that is any gauge of sincerity

The "Daily Express," under the startling headline, "An Egyptian Conspiracy," state that 75 native officers have been degraded by order of the Council of Ministers, and adds that the news bears out the romour to the effect that certain native officers had arranged to join the Tarks in the event of hostilities following the British Ultimatum to Tarkey. This rumour appears to us to be hardly worth contradietion. The native officers of the t Egyptian army are loyal to H. H. tbe Khedive, as are their men.
The story is of a piece with the story published by the Csiro correspondent of the
Pall Mall Gazette," who stated that at the most critical stage of the negotiations the Egyptian troops at Cairo were deprived of lo their arms. Unfortunately for this sensational story the truth is that one of the three battalions in Cairo sent its rifles in to have the barrels browned for the eommer. This procedure is followed early in May every 1 year and the usual routine W88 followed in 1906
The "Daily Mail" states that on Teesday week the express train from Calsis to Brindisi, carrying the Indian mail, and having on board a number of English passengers, narrowly escaped destruction. It appears that in consequence of the displacement of the bed of the river & re it bad been found necessary to place & temporary point near the Saint Antoine torrent. Owing, it is sopposed, to some sosident, the point was wrongly eet, and the Brindisi express ran off the down line on to the op line, and continued ranning at a speed of sixty
miles and hoor on the wrong set of metals for y several miles without the driver perceiving t what had happened, it being pitch dark at
the time. The keeper of the French end of or the tunnel leading into Italy, however, saw -s.wbst bad happered, and set all his signals r. against the express, with the result that the

Our Cairo morning contemporary, to use its classical expression, "has a poke" at our Special Correspondent at Denishwai mainly on account of his statement that the villagers eat rats and mice. The writer of the article wa refer to has evidently spent very little time outside Cairo daring his residence in Egypt. Otherwise he would be aware that the fellabeen of the rougher and poorer districts will eat worse things than rats and mica, which are in the villages, at least, clean-feed ing animals. An acquiatanca of the writer's on one occasion came across two Sharkieh fellabeen eating the raw entrails of a fox, and there is no doubt that in many places both in Syria and Egypt the fellabeen, when hungry or craving a mest diet, will est animals that are usually considered unclean. The writer was intormed at Deras that the trang Jordan Arabs will eat hyaena at times, and the habit of earth esting is very common among Egyptian fellabeen.
The keun interest H.H. the Kbelive takes in everything touching apon the welfare of the country, and more particularly npon its commercial development, is well known, 88 is the fact that he is a believer in the ability of the Oriental to take a high place in the pro motion of that development. It is not surprising t therefore that his Highness has shown his appreciation of the work lately done by the chairman and managing director of the Gbarbieh Land Co., who is, az Our readers are aware, also the managing director of the Egyptian Baterprise and Development Co. This is a gentleman who is at the head of enterprises that have brought about one million pounds of European capital into Egypt, enterprises which though still young are among the most promising of those that have been started of late years, and are of a character that has induced a number of Englishmen of high repute to associate themselves with their control. It is perhaps needless for us to say that we are speaking of Mansour Negaib Pacha Shakoor, on whom his Highness conferred the grade of Mirmiran on the day before his departure for Constantinople.
The new Pacha is a member of a family wellknown in Egypt and Syria, and having been educated in Eagland and Switzerland, qualified as an engineer in the latter country. Having
spent eighteen years in the service of the - Egyptian Government, chiefly in the Railway
Department, in which he rose to the rank of chief of the Blectrical and Signalling Dapartment of that service, he some time ago retired with the object of devoting himself to the promotion and development of schemes for the waltare of the country soch as those embodied in the working of the two companies we have mentioned above, which he is now carrying ont with the aid of a most competent staff, inclading several Englishmen whose esteem for their chief is fianded apon their recognition of his great ability and high personal qualities.

Constantinople, April 25. The Beys in Egypt have at length made themselves masters of Caire, in the citadel of which they shut up Mebemed Seid Ali, the former Chief of the Arpants, and who had made himself Governor of Egypt. The Beys, however, bave dismissed him from that post by Proclamation, and dispatched a Courier hitber, to communicate this event to the Grandt Seignior, at the same time jastifying their conduct and adding a declaration, that if the Porte would confirm the ancient privileges of the Beys, they were perfectly disposed to admit bis Sovereignty, and to pay the ancient tributes. They also proposed, that the Porte should appoint a new Governor of Bgypt, in E the person of Hourcbed Pacha, or Hemed Pacha, both of whom had already filled that offie; they, the beye, being all willing, ander these limitations, to resign the Government of Cairo to each Governor.

A proposal is made in this month's iggle of Egyptian Cotton" for holding a cotton show at Alexandria. It is Huggested that the show might be ander the auspices of the Alexandria General Produce' Association, and October and November are regarded as guitable months for the purpose. The principal object would be to exhibit. to Egyptian cotton-growers what is being done in other parts of the world in eot ton caltivation. Merchants in Alexandria conld of course easily obtain representative samples from the United States, India, the Sadan, and 80 on to form an interesting and instructive exhibition. The British Cotton growing Association would perhaps participate by pro viding exbibits from Nigeria, Lagor, and elsewhere. Ginping, spinning, weaving, and agricultural machinery ooold and indeed onght. to be also on exhibit, and manufactarers won! doubtleys gladly embrace the opportunity ot showing their productions. Opinions are being Canvassed on the soggestion. One that natarally suggests itselt is that ag October and November are tourist months there should be a section of Egyptian exhibits, and one as extensive as any."
At the London Bankruptcy Court yesterday week Registrar Linklater bad before him the I public examination of Cecil Shrager, the
London partner of tbe firm of Shrager Brothers, of Lloyd's-avenue, and of Calcatta and Alexandris. The accounts of the London firm which had been filed disclose liabilities amounting to £78,893 (£61,518 being unsecared) and assets £4,089. The accounts of the Indian branches had not yet been filed. The debtor stated in examination that the tarnover of the firm had not been less than £4,000,000 a year, and what brought them down was a loss of some £50,000 or £60,000 on certain jate contracts which they bad been unable to execute broagh the cornering of the market and through disastrous floods which had disorganised the railway traffic. Mr. Rehder, for the trastee, asked that the public examination of the debtor might be adjourned on the ground that, owing to the accounts from the Indian branches not having been received, he had rot been able to investigate them. The Registrar refused to | accede to the request, saying that he could always call upon the debtor to aseist him in the administration of the estate. He would help the trustee by calling in the aid of the Calcutta Court to examine the partner there. He accordingly concluded the examination of Cecil Sbrager and adjourned generally the examinations of Isaac and Adolph Shrager, while as regarded John Shrsger, another partner who had sent in no accounts, his examination was adjourned sine die.

quently owing to reports of drought, and Bears covering, prices advanced sharply about | 16 points, bat the improvement has only been partially maintained, more favourable crop Dews, and renewed Bear selling causing a sharp reaction. EXTRACTS FROM THE HOME PRESS
The Education BIII.
One wonders whetber the poor Liberala are to have a real holiday at all, or who her they are expected to work the party gramopbune up and down the country during the recens. Or is the Government as uncertain as the Dake of Devonshire about the real popularity or un popularity of its measure, and is it boping, by pontponement of discussion upon its completed Bill, to find ont bow far it is safe to go in resisting the emendments which the House of Lords may make? The general impression made by its polioy as at present disclosed is that of violence without strength, and a show of confidence covering some trepidation.-- ("Times.)
The Pleasures of Berlin
The municipal authorities in Berlin have conceived the idea that its Amusements are too cheap, and decided to clap a tax npon them. Henceforth every ticket for a theatre or concert, for a ball, a race meeting, and even bezaar, will pay toll to the township. We are not surprised to learn that this latest develop ment of oivio wisdom is "extremely unpopular," although the extra charge in trifling in itaelf. In Bogland wo koow that people who do not grudge half a guinea for a stall gromble wou folly about paying sixpence, for a programme, thongh they would cheerfully bestow it as a gift on the obliging young lady who condvota them to their seats. What they renent is being forcad to pay for something which they think should be given them for nothing.-("Standard.")
America's Millonalro Show.
We are to understand that the Rockefallera and others come here with the express porpose of dazzling 08, much as the fortunate possens of a false eye might betake himself to Central Africa io order to astonish the unsopbistioated savages with his one possible stroke of magio, From the magician to the clown is after all but a short stop, and already the American who comes here to astonish Earope is as often ridi. oulous as merely amusing.-("Daily News.")
Mr. Soddon's Record Shout.
Among Mr. Seddon's other records is the loadest shout heard in the streets of London in our time. It was daring the Coronation tastivitie, when the Colonial military contingents were marobing along the Mall. A stand had been erooted for the distinguished representatives of Greater Britain. Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the Prime Minister of Canada, was astonished at the apathy of the orowd, and said :-"These people want waking up. I say, Seddon, you bave a good voice. Raise a cheer." The New Zealand Premier took off bis hat, waved it on high, and emitted a yell that eoboed from Buckingbam Palace to St. Paul's. And the Londoners woke up. ("Daily Chronicle.")

The guardian Jose of Canton, having hardoned his heart to all prayers for a cessation of the heavy rainfalls, it has been decided to remove the roof of his temple, so that he shall have his share of the downpoor. It is expected that this will melt bim. ("Tribune.") Our Ellen Torry.
They say-or they used to say-that we English have no real love or appreciation of art in any of its forms-the dramatic among them. After yesterday's proceedings at Drary Lane our oritics must at least admit that, so far as our players are concerned, we manage to conceal oar indifference rather effectually. The trath, surely, is that in no country more than in England, and in no ospital more than in London, are the public loyal to their old favourites. Not even Paris itself could have improved upon the warmth of the demonstration of popular affection to which Ellen Terry was treated yesterday, though Paris sent some of its most brilliant representativas of the actor's art to testity their admiration for the heroine of the day. It was a great possionthe greatest, in its way, that the present generation of playgoers has seen--and, take it for all in all, we shall not look apon its like again. ("Pall Mall Gazette.")

The Money Market.
There is very little change to report in monetary conditions since last week. The market has been standing on the verge of ense, and heritates before adopting any definite view. Credit dealers had to bear in
Da mind that a goodly number of bille discounted with the Bank of England are just now matur. ing, and they are likewise awaiting a better week's showing in the returns of that institution. In to 3 po this the market was somewhat disappointed Union yesterday, for although the reserve had been Brie a augmented by about a million and a half, and o tbe market's balances bad decreased by pearly sabsta two millione. The India Council, too, bas been Egyp calling in its loans doring the past few day, The so that with the approach of the end of the the tr halt year also, it is not to be wondered at that tically the expected ease should be slightly delayed. the 8 That this is only a balt in the downward taking trend seems probable, for the faotors which close mainly dominate the position need cause no Saniel uneasiness. The French obeque, it is true, has 16). weakened a little, but not onough to oall for are any alarm, whilst the American exobange has at a Bhowo a ver steady tondency and the other renca exobanges remain favourable.
i 800 The Stock Exobange obtained their loans in re over the account at 41%, a drop of % ninos worth the last settlement. Call money to-day is Saga about 25% to 21 % with plenty of lendørs. closir
The discount houses have been working | bavo throogbout the week at about 8 % per cont., I - and to-day call maturities are being taken at at 8 8 per cent., but the Joint Stook bank bave | and generally been willing takers of bills at 88 for lunch some days past, which imparts a healthy tone to the outlook.
1 The Stock Markota.
The count just completed has been re
tavo markable only for the extreme paucity of the resu business transacted, doloeso having been pre
bobl dominant throughout all sections, Honce the
tion work connected with the carry over was of the lightest, and was specdily completed. Now I kbe that it is out of the way, members of the
11-1 Stook Exchange are looking forward to a Mir period of more activity. The conditions per B tainly warrant this expectation. Our relations the with the other Powers are satisfactory, and the even in regard to thone countries which in the
revi past we have regarded with suspicion and some
was enmity feeling is being more and more inflamar onoed by the spirit of "Eotento Cordiale." As men for the trade of the ooantry, the prosperity labe pontinue and the railways are reporting l be increased traffics weekly. Nothing is now lext wanting bat the interest of the investing pub-des lio. Their attitude for a long time past has been charaaterised by indifference, but it is to res
be remembered that they have been influenced whi nat
by a series of political distarbanoss at home an
and abroad. It is hoped that with the great l's.
improvement in the outlook they will exhibit renewed confidence.
A88 The only point of interest this week basahe been the placing of the long-expected now lon Irish Land issue. In some quarters fault has
tobeen found with the Government for announion
oing this at the present jonotore, but this
dissatisfaction has not been shared by the balk he
of investors, the issue having been very oordially received. In fact, the list was only open not from Taesday antil Thursday noon, although I are the advertised time-limit does not expire untilain

Paris has developed inoreased nervousness respecting Russian affairs, and Rassian bonds
have been largely offered on the Bourse. able This feeling of weakness has been refl-cted don't here, the Stock Exchange being by no means Nox assured that a conflict betwzen tbe Govern

The tone of the home railway market is one 13 ND.
of idleness, dealings being very insignificant. Several declines have been marked, though most of the besvies remain steady. · A comparison of the traffis for tha fortnight including the Whitson holidays with those for the sime period last year shows some astonishing results. The London and North Western,
which had a gain ot £7,000 in 1905, has an Pale additional increase of £21,000. The South
Bustern and Chatham and the Lancashire and Ale. Yorkshire are, respectively, £14,600 , and
