The two Egyptian limited liability companies, the Tewfik eh Nile Navigation and the Payoom Light Railway, have both been failores, but we are glad to see that these unfortunate precedents have not damped the ardoar of the natives; for a new company entirely administered by Egyptians has just been formed for the purpose of running saw-mills and iron-worka, | under the title of the icociété Economique Praternelle." sod its home iš at Alexandria. The capital is LE: 19,000 in 4,000 shares, f which has been all sobęcribed by natives.. 1 We wish the new indestrial venture every 8200ess, for there is no inherent reason why a limited liability, company run by Datives should not socceed. The fact, however, rerains to be explained why when so many promo-. tions are being laanched now-a-days in Egypt, the management is invariably not in Egyptianbands, and the only two Egyptian companies have come to an untimely end. It is not a goestion of essential differences between Moslem and Christian, as the two Egyptian companies were essentially Coptio concerns. Nor is it due to any differences between the Oriental and the Occidental for the Jew can co-operate in company business &$' successfully as the European. Of course there are companies, sach | as the Land Allotment, where the grant majorlity of the board are native, but the raling spiri: on the board is an Eagli-hman and the thanagement is in English Frands. The progress of this new Bgyptian company will be watok: ed with considerable išiterest for if it sadceeds it-obaald be a hopeful precadent.
As we shall shortly pablish the prospectos.of the Egypt and Levant Steam Navigation Com. pany Limited, the following details will be of interest to the large number of our readers who intend to'invest in the new concern. Tbe company's fleet at the prèent time consists of foor steamers, which have been taken over from the Talbot Steamship Compaby of Smyipa. In addition to these, four new steamers are to be bought or boilt, making a fleet of. eight vešrels. They will fulfil the fänctions of ordinary tramp steamers and there is plenty of scope for the development of the trade, especially as the Talbot Bteamship. Company has been taken over ag a flourishiog going concern and hu a large élientèle in the Levant. The local, members of the board of directors. are Menors. Harry Barker, Peroy Carver, and Williain Ryes, Hesides two other London directors, experienced in shipping. The manage ment will be at Smyrns and the Egyptian Tagency will be in the hand of Messrs. Barker l'and Company, of Alexandria. The company
will be ron economically and the ships will be excellent of their kind, and with such ex 'perienced local men of businges on the board, the company should do well;

A native contemporary says:
The Khediva' gave audience on Monday afternoon 'to the Prime Minister, the Ministar

A Washington "special" in the American Press states as follows : Cope Whitehouse has been vindicated. The Egyptian Government has at last sekaowledged that, in spite of its | - previous denisle, certain official papers 'to sapport his claim toʻlegal rights in a great project are really in existence. These papers are on their way to the State Department'in Washing-| ton, and whatever else they may show they will at least prove that Mr. Whitehouse has, not been the victim of imagination of gailty of misrepresentation in the prosecation of his claim.
. 1. Mr. Whitehogse claimed that he had perfected his title to the. Wady Rayan bý filing the necessary papers with the Egyptian Government. This the Egyptian Government denied.' Then Me Whitebound bad the Senate call for the papers in the case in the Possession of the State Department, and man aged to have the United States Government make more inquiries of the Egyptian agthor, ities as to the whereabouts of the doonments, which; he said, he had filed at Cairo. | To-day word came that the documents had been dissovered, and that copies of them had been forwarded to Washington. This information came from Consul-General Iddings at Cairo, wbo had been instructed by the depart ment to obtain copies of the papers relating to the claims of Mr. Whitehouse. The documents were mailed from Cairo on March-5.;

The recent petition to the Prince of Wales for tbe grant of a Constitution to Egypt is affording material for discussion to the Arabic Press. As was to be foregben, all the opponents of the Occupation are in agreement -that, they want something, or other different
from what they bava dow got, bat everyone wants something quite distinct frog the aspirations of his neighboar and every native newspaper has its own petiden on the subject.?..
Ar Mosyad" bolds that the "Bgyptian nation" should damgad a Constitation from Great Britain through the instrumentality of some delegates, who may leave for London this.Bommer on a mission." -.. "Al Lawa" declares that to apply to any Baropean Power for the institation of a Parlis ment is unpatriotic. His Highness can then deal with the question, Ås the Oseqpation has no valid argumenta tooppose to the grant of a Constitution, they would be perplexed as to wbat coorze to follow."
"Al Ahrám" thinks that Sheikh Tewfik el Bakri made a mistake in publishing his petition to the Prince of Wales in the columns of "Al Moayad." The leader of the Egyptian sristocracy göght to have submitted the pati. tion in Bog'ish to thi Pringe. "The sheikh göght to go in person to every ospital in Earope and make. ha apgaag! to prove to the world that parliamentary goveriment is the earnest desite of the Egyptians, Then Earope frould hearken to Egypt." 3. That the /Malteie were alarmed, when •ooe one maliciously spread the rumour that the Mediterranean F eet was going forthwith to he shorn, of .niort of its importance, i® perfectly true. But there was nothing de- grading in their apprehensidn. The Maltose are j ost as proud of the Mediterranean Pleet m the. people of any other portion of the Empve. Indeed we beiieye that their intox- ication.'of delight, if it had .to fight again, and. of coarse, triumphed as of old, would be as deep as that of Euglithaasn born and brad in the British Isles.. Now the Maltese, just like any otWr body of people in this respect, could pot contemplate the probability of their sources of labour being dried ' up. They, work
