The inhabitants of Moscow were unable at any rate to compts in the day before yesterday of the dulness of their Sabbath. A series of charges of mounted police through dense masses of students and workmen, to the accompaniment of hoarse shouts, soreams of pain, and cries of "Down with the War," forms a diversion which if carried on for some time takes at least the edge off the deathlike stillness of the Day of Rest. Sixty persons were wounded in the melée, 300 were arrested, and 20, according to the Standard, received the "happy despatch." Of a truth this collision between the police and the people is a most unfortunate affair from the standpoint of all moderate and prudent reformers. It was not by such men that the demonstration was got up : it was by the revolutionary Socialists, who have been distributing seditious literature for some time past. Clearly, such occurrences as that of Sunday play straight into the hands of the dominant bureaucracy, by enabling them tu represent reforma as revolution, and any con cessions as a surrender to the revolutionaries. According to telegrams from St. Petersburg, the latter are fast recovering the upper hand, while the Tsar is reported to have informed his ministers of his determination to maintain the principle of autocracy for his son. Autocracy is too deeply ingrained in the Romanoff character. It is the first principle of the Tsardom to abandon it or to trifle with it would be considered by the Tsar an act of base treachery his religion, to his ancestors, and, above all, to the infant Tsarevitch. in dream opin teressed to
We wish to all the attention of our readers to an important paper, which we publish to-day in another columu, on the above subject, taken from the recently published journal of the Bri. tish Chamber of Commerce. It is written by an engineer who, having had some previous experience of similar work in other parts of the world, has for the last thirty-four years had the opportunity of watching the work of our port in its inception and execution, and in recent years hag seen its growing insufficiency to cope with the requirements of our ever increasing trade. Many of our readers are better fitted then we are to express an opinion on the technic value of the scheme, which Mr. Cornish des little more than outline in his short but interesting paper, and we should be glad to heal their opinions on a question of such great in forest to our town. We are pleased to see that the paper does not pretend to lay down any hard-and-fast lines, and it modestly suggests that the Egyptian Govern. I ment should examine some of the most modern ports, where work similar to ours is not only done, but done pmuch better than it is here. We regret that the paper was not published in time to be submitted to the Railway Com: mission which last week completed its labours, as they might have found something in it worthy of notice. We understand that the suggestions now made were submitted to a high official of the Egyptian Government five or six years ago and that he approved of them in principle, but said that he took a personal interest in that class of work, and intended working out all the details himself. Unfortunately, he soon after left the country; nor is it likely that a work of this kind will ever be carried out, if it has to wait until the president of a great administration can find time to work out the details himself. We are not in a position to say whether the scheme now suggested is, or is not, the best suited to our wants, but it is put forward by and wellkuown resident, who represents an undertaking largely interested in the tature welfare of our town, and as such we think that it is worthy of some consideration
General Stoessel's despatches from the 25th ulto. to the 10th inst. detail the terrible assaults which took place between the 20th November and the 2nd December. He says that, according to the prisoners and the Chinese, the Japanese lost 20.000 men during this period. He reports the capture of the 203 metre hill, and the death of General Teherpinsky, who was wounded there. He concludes by stating that the ships are suffering from the effects of the 11-inch shells. The spirit of the garrison is excellent. (Reuter.)
After a desperate charge, General Samejoma. captured Fort Toun-Kioun-shan. The Russians abandoned five field guns. (Havas.)
The Japanese have altogether lost two torpedo boats in the operations against the "Sevastopol." The Japanese have stormed and captured the north fort east of Kik-wan, Admiral Togo reports that only six Russian destroyers remain at Port Arthur. (Reuter.)
The Japanese exploded an immense mine under the fort north of Kik-wan on Sunday afternoon. They rushed to the breach, and desperate fighting took place with grenades and bayonets, which was continued until midnight, when the capture was completed. Five guns and two Maxims were taken. The Russians left 50 dead. (Reuter.)
20, Admiral Togo reports that a damaged Russian destroyer is ashore near the "Sevastopol." She is, apparently, torpedoed. (Reuter.)
Admiral Birileff has been appointed to the command of the third squadron, which the Admiralty expects will sail on the 28th January (Reuter.)

Vend 'THEATRE, CAIRO.--
It is a great pity that Cairenes do not patronise the Verdi Thes. tre more than they do. The Italian opera company which now holds the boards of this pretty little theatre is excellent, yet on many evenings the performances have been very badly attended. The only reason for this lack of patronage appears to be that the majority of the respectable inhabitants of the Capita still think it is a music ball, as it was only short time back. The prices have been lowered, but even this does not appear to bave made the theatre more popular,
The death took place at Cairo yesterday evening, from diabetes, of Menshawi Pasha, one of the richest landowners in the country, who owned immense estates in the neighbourhood of Tantah. The late Menshawi Pasha was a well-known and greatly respected figure ir native society, and came into close contact with the Europeans of the country. As far back as 1882, he distinguished himself during the "events" by his protection of Christians. The circumstances of the incident in which he was | concerned a few years back at Korashieh are still too fresh in the minds of our readers to need recapitulation. Lately Menshawi Pasha had made himself prominent by the number and munificence of his benefactions. He dispensed cbarity with a liberal hand, and both European and native institutions benefited largely by his liberality. He endowed a large number of mosques throughout the country. His latest scheme, which had not as yet borne fruit, was the establishment of an Agricultural Bank on a philanthropic basis, the object being to lend money to the tellaheen without any interest being charged. Although Menshawi was a staunch "Nationalist," in the local sense of the term, and was reputed to be a rabid AngloI phobe, he always received Englishmen, both in his business and private relations, with the utmost courtesy and consideration He was by birth a pnre Arab.

Certain unauthorised statements having appeared in the Press to the effect that the site on which the Victoria College stands is to : be sold and the school removed to another locality, the Executive Committee wishes to l. state exactly the facts of the case, which are as fo How - (1) The College is now full, having regard to the existing accommodation. (2) Arrangements are being made, and will be completed before the next scholastic year, to enlarge the school; more class-rooms will be opened on the present site, and further provision will be roade for the reception of boarders. (3) The Executive Committee anticipate, judging by the present success of the College, that it will eventually be necessary to very | considerably extend the College premises, in which case it may be desirable to arrange to dispose of the present site and build a larger College in another locality. (1) It is not expected that any such larger scheme could be carried through for some time (probably at least eighteen months) and in no case would the work of the College be inter-1 rupted, nor would the present buildings be abandoned, until the new College was com.. pletely built and equipped for the accommodation of pupils. Our readers are no doubt aware of the serious dissatisfaction which exists in London at the charges levied by the directors of the Suez Canal. Matters have now culminated in the suggestion by responsible members of the shipping community, that a new canal be cut, parallel with the existing waterway, but shorter by about 31 miles. At first sight such an idea may seem impracticable, but so far from this being the case in reality, the malcontents have prepared their plans, and are ready to start at once.
The Pall Mall Gazette states that Mr. | Theodore Angier, of the well-known firm of | Angier Bros., has been the moving spirit in the agitation for a competing canal, and that owing to his energy, surveys and plans have been drawn up in readiness. It is hoped to obtain all the money required in Great Britain, and those responsible for the scheme are conI vinced that the dues charged by the Suez Canal authorities can be reduced by balf.
The promoters of the new scheme are not prepared to publish estimates of construction costs at present, but any invitation for public funds will be in the form of Debenture stock. Considering, however, the heavy interest of the British Government in the existing canal, and the impossibility of making two sach waterways pay on half the present dues, there is not | likely to be a great rush for the new stock if it ever comes to be offered--which is highly improbable.
Last aight, the installation ceremony of the Ragheb Lodge took place in the Massonic Hall at Cairo. A large gathering assembled at 6 p.m., when accepted candidates were initiated into the secrets of Masonry. After this came the installation ceremony, in which | Worshipful Brother Fred. A. Beale was placed in the chair by the outgoing Master W. B.. Plunkett.
After the investiture of the officers for the ensuing year the Brethren adjourued to the | Grand Continental Hotel, where a magnificent banquet was partaken of under the personal supervision of Brother Klingler. The following items composed the toast list: H.H. the Khedive, and Prince Mohamed Aly, P.G.M., Egypt; The King, Protector of the Craft; H.E. Idris Bey Rayheb, M.W.G.M., Grand Lodge Officers,
Past and Present; Kindred Grand Lodges ; | The Worshipful Master; The I.P.M. and Ins talling Master; The Past Masters; The Offioers of the Lodge; The Initiates; The Visitors; Tyler's Toast.
A number of speeches were made and a most enjoyable evening was spent. The outgoing Master's speech was especially eloquent. He dealt with the great future that awaited this flourishing lodge and heartily thanked all present for the support they had given him during the past year, which was a record year in every respect. The banquet was graced by the presence of the Most Worshipful Grand Master of Egypt, Idris Bey Ragheb, and among others present were W. B. Courtenay Clifton, Gottlieb, Wright, Macdonald, Ahmed Bey, Nasart Ragheb, Foster, Smith, Miralai Tewfik Bey, Hatherall, Harris, Sierney, Lahitta, | etc., etc.
The annual sale of work at the Young Women's Christian Association, held at the association rooms, Cairo, on Friday last, was opened by the Countess of Cromer. Dean Butcher presided, and in a few words showed how the Home and Institute were evidently meeting growing needs. Reference was made also to the ever-increasing demand for accommodation.
After a vote of thanks to the Countess of Cromer had been passed on the motion of the Hon. A. Davey, Miss Minns Gollock, formerly a member of the Headquarters Committee of the World's Y. W. 0. A., London, in thanking Dean Butcher, spoke of the many developments of the work-educational, social, etc., at home and abroad. | A fine art gallery, arranged with great care | by Mr. Morten Chinn, was open during the afternoon, and a ventriloquial entertainment provided by the kindness of Mr. Stephens. The rental of the institute is a heavy one, and the object of the sale was to get funds to meet |this. One suggestion brought forward by Dean Bateher was that ladies should join the association as honorary associates, paying a minimum subscription of P.T. 25. This is one of the many ways in which friends can help on the work, and it is to be hoped it will be warmly taken up.

Captain Adams, R.E., the general manager of the Delta Light Railways in Cairo, took formal possession yesterday of the Cairo Helouan railway system, and the amalgamation of the two railways is now an accomplished fact, the Government sanction having already been granted.
There is no intention of making any changes in the personnel and office staff, except in the case of Mr. E. J. Adda, the former popular and ever obliging manager of the H buan line, nor is it in contemplation to make any immediate alteration in the present timetable or fares. Mr. Beareroft remains in cho ge of the Engineering and Locomotive Department and Mr. Williams, from the London and North Western Railway, has been appointed traffic manager of the Helouan system.
It has been decided to abolish the lottery now drawn twice weekly (on Fridays and Sundays), and the free lottery ticket now issued with the rail ticket will consequently be no longer given to passengers of the first and second class on paying their farg, from that date.
All rumours current to the contrary notwithstanding, there is, however, no immediate prospect of the electrification of the line between Cairo and Helouan, and should such a change be entertained later, it is more likely to be in the shape of an electric railways rather than an electric tram service, as the substituItion of the latter for the present mode of traction would only be increasing the time now employed by the trains in doing the journey of 26 kilometres between the Capital and the increasingly-popular suburb of Helouan, which is done in exactly 30 minutes by the express trains. What is now contemplated is, as soon as all the preliminary details of taking over the line are completed, to begin the work of doubling some 12 miles of the main line, and as we mentioned in & former article last month, to smarten up and improve the train service and stations. Both residents and tourists may safely leave both these improvements, as well as any future ones, in the hands of Captain Adams, the new able and energetic general manager,
ZIZINIA THEATRE.
"MADAME BUTTERFLY." Possibly no great composer ever received such a rebuff on the production of a new.opers as did Puccini at the Scala on the first representation of Madame Butterfly. It was coldly received throughout, and applauded only, by & very small minority, much to the annoyance of the larger section of the audience, who had assembled in the hope of assisting at another triumph to be added to the laurels of Puccini. The cause of their disappointment and adverse criticism was due entirely to the con Doser's doubtful prudence in making use of practically identical passages and effects as in Bohlene and Manon. This was naturally offensive to an audience to whom the melodies of these successful compositions were so well known, and although condemned perheps somewhat hastily, I the fact remains that, notwithstanding Puccini's having made several changes in certain passages, and eliminated entirely portions of the original composition, Madame Butterfly has never been popular, has met with little patronage, and its fontortunate reception at the "Scala" in February of the present year resulted in its being removed from both London and American repertoires, although we believe that it is to be produced at Covent Garden next season.
The production last evening, however, was an unqualified success, and although there : does appear occasionally a reminder of Boheme or Manon, we imagine this to be a natural consequence. It is scarcely fair to expected entire absence of what may be terined the composer's personality from his severaloperas.Madame Butterfly, as it now stands, is undoubtedly a very meritorious work, and contains many delightful melodies and harmonies which ought ere now to have tided it over its earlier misfortune. Signorina Pandolfini's Madame Butterfly was & per formance far above the range of most operatio artistes. One too frequently finds a total disregard for the dramatic portion of the character, emanating very frequently from an entire absence of histrionio ability. Sigua. Pandolfini, on the contrary, bas proved herself not only a vocalist of artistic merit, but an emotional actress of a very high order, and her performance last night was evidently the result of assiduous and careful study. To was 13 fortunate, for the success of Madame sutterfly IN as a whole is entirely dependent upon the | lady who supports the title rôle. A vord of praise is also due to Signorina Margherita Julia for her artistic performance as Suzuki. Signor Giraud, as Pinkerton, and Signor Polese, as Sharpless, were equadly good in their limited roles. The minor characters were in capable hands and the chorus exceedingly good. The charming invisible chorus which forms the pathetic closing of the second aeti was rapturously applauded, and received a very decided encore. The staging of the opera was admirable and the orchestra excellent.
Owing to the indisposition of the ténor, there will be no performance this evening.
ELECTRIC LIGHTING
Yesterday's Journal Officiel contains the text of the contract entered into between the le Mansourah Municipality, on the one part, and the Mansourah Electric Supply Company, on the other, for the electric lighting of the town.
The Journal also contains the specification relating to the concession of the eleotrio lighting of Helouan,
The long-pending difficulty between the ion Copts and Abyssinians has been removed. As ned your readers are aware, last summer an Ottoman ady Mission was sent to Magdala in connection with
this, and Sadyk El Moayad Pasha, Imperial ges Commissary at Sofia, handed to the Negus an the autograph letter from the Sultan. As the lar result of this Mission, the question has been man settled in favor of the Coptic community, and ny the Khedive has been reassured by the Sultan ble that the community shall be reinstated in the
of property from which they had been expelled. ent! The fact of the Turkish Government having rth entered into direct relations with the Negus ffic has afforded much satisfaction here, and it is
hoped that Sadyk Pasha's mission will lead to ery the development of good relations between the nd two countries. ow H. B. Kyrillos, Greek-Catholic Patriarch at Ely Alexandria, who was to have left Rome last rst week for Constantinople, has postponed his om departure, and is now expected to arrive next
week. He is the bearer of a letter from the ot-Pope to the Sultan.
Captain Schwank, Russian naval attaché e here, is expected to arrive at Constantinople a this week. He was sent to Egypt by his to Government to be present during the passage er through the Suez Canal of the Russian 1- Squadron.

We regret that the great demand upon our space just now prevents us from giving a detailed report of this very interesting sketch of Dr. Barnardo's work in England, interspersed as it was with remarks dealing, some of them very fully, with philanthropio work generally in its various aspects, and especially emphasising the il portance of the proper training of the children of the destitute poor. The Rev. Canon Ward presided and mentioned some facts connected with his own experiences in England.

Coughs Bronchitis Lung Troubles
Angier's Emulsion has a wonderfully soothing and healing effect upon throat, lungs and air passages. The relief which it affords from cough, bronchial distress and difficult expectoration is almost immediate, while the rapidity with which it cuts short the attacks is a surprise to all who have tried it. Angier's Emulsion is both a healing lung remedy and a powerful tonic that benefits the entire system; it is pleasant to take, promotes appetite, aids digestion and builds up strength.

TURBINE BOAT AT PORT SAID
Port Said, December 18. The S.S. "Linga," just built by Messrs. Denny Bros., of Dumbarton, for the British India Steam Navigation Co., Ltd., arrived here yesterday on her way out to Bombay, where she will be employed in the mail and passenger service between Bombay, Karachi, and the Persian Gulf.
The arrival of new steamers at this port is 50 common an occurrence that even the largest ships attract but little attention ; but there are two circumstances connected with the S.S. "Linga" which make her worthy of more than passing notice. In the first place, she is fitted with triple propellers and turbines, and as yet ocean voyages by such boats are uncommon. In the second place, she is built for & service very similar to the Brindisi and Port Said mail service run by the P. & 0. Co. Almat all Anglo-Egyptians are interested in the Brindisi service and in the prospect of getting home quicker, and without the discom fort experienced on the "Isis" or "Osiris" when driving at high speed in a heavy sea. It is safe to say that if this could be overcome the number of passengers using this route would increase by leaps and bounds. Everything points to the fact of the turbine steamer being the ship of the future, and it is claimed by the inventors that one of its greatest benefits is the absence of vibration, which thşkes travelling at present so unpleasant on Steamers of high speed. The voyage of the "Linga" has not only fully proved this to be correct, but has disclosed a further great advantage. All on board the “Linga" testify with the greatest enthusiasm to the exceptional seaworthiness of the ship, and state that in the whole of a voyage, during which bad weather was experienced throughout, not & single sea was shipped. The voyage from Waterford to Port Said was made in 9 days, and for two days in the Bay of Biscay the ship was eased down to 11 knots. The “Pegu," & 7000 tons steamer, was in the Bay at the same time, and was compelled to lay to for 40 hours. The fact of a vessel somewhat smaller than the "Isis” coming through such weather at 11 knots, and that without shipping a single BEA, is indeed remarkable, and should bring. comfort to many & bad sailor. The chief engineer, Mr. James Martin, spoke of the engines in terms of highest praise, and drew special attention to the fact that for three consecutive days, running at the rate of 525i revolutions per minute, there was only a variation of 10 ths. of a revolution per minute. For the information of the general public who may not be able to appreciate the full meaning, of so remarkable a record, it may be explained that this is a positive proof that no racing of the propellors took place. The small dia. meter of the turbine propellor, as compared with that of the old type, is the reason for this. The coal consumption was about the same pro rata as with the old style of engine. The turbines were built by Parsons, and the trial speed was 183 knots. The Brindisi boats can under favourable conditions do more than this, but the ease with which the "Linga" can travel through a heavy sea, coupled with the absence of vibration, would probably enable her tol, maintain a better average than the P. & 0.1 boats.
WHY KIDNEY DISEASE IS SO SERIOUS.
Kidney disease is serious, because it comes on so quietly. It has many symptoms, but
ten they are mistaken for other diseases. Hadaches, rheumatism, a nervous, irritable Condition, weak heart, dropsy, sleeplessness, an always tired feeling, yellow complexion, unnatural urine, too much or too little urinethese are just as much symptoms of kidney disease as backache, gravel, bladder troubles, etc.
Kidney disease may have been working in the system for years before the patient suspected the cause of his trouble. That's the danger.
Treat the kidneys at the first sign of any ailment. That is the only safe way. Keep them well, and they will keep you well. Doan's backache kidney pills help the kidneys to filter the blood, and remove from it all disease breeding impurities. That explains their success.
Doan's backache kidney pills are for sale by all chemists and druggists for P.T. 13 per box, or P.T. 71 for 6 boxes; or they may be had by post from the general agent for Egypt, Mr. Max Fischer, Hotel du Nil St., Mousky St., Cairo
THE PORT OF ALEXANDRIA.
BY J. E. CORNISH, C.M.G. M. INST. C. E.
Of all the many interesting questions which are now being discussed with regard to the comercial development of this country, none is of greater or of more immediate interest than the uecessity of some better arrangements for | discharging and loading ships in Alexandria harbour.
The French Chamber of Commerce recently I published an able article on the subject, giving valuable statistics, and the local Press has taken up the question in a series of articles, all tending to show the insufficiency of our quay space, and the urgent necessity of extension. Each of these points may be considered to have been amply proved, but we are still in presence of the facts that new quays are not only very expensive, but they take a long time to build
We well remember some years ago when the contract was made for building the latest jetty now forming the Northern end of the quays ; the gentleman who was then Engineer-in-chief to the Railway Administration told us that the contract time for the work was seven months, and that it would be completed in that time. These seven months did not suffice for removing the mud to clear the site for the foundations, and it was nearly four years before the jetty was ready for use. Although the new Quays now being made are getting on better than this, their execution can hardly be called rapid, and after some years of work, it will still be a very long time before they are available.
We should like to put the question from another point of view, and ask if something much better than the present arrangements could not be done with the actual quay space now available. We have some slight acquaintance with many modern ports, and we notice that comparatively few of them can afford to use! their quays in the lavish way that is the custom here, where ships lie alongside the main quays. It is much more usual for ships to be moored end on to the quay and to discharge on pontoons; in this way many more ships can be accommodated on a given length of quay. But another and much more important difference, that we notice between ours and other modern ports, is (with the exception of the coal hoists) the absolute lack of any proper crane or warehouse arrangements for facilitating the work. In nearly all other ports you see rapid electric or hydraulic cranes taking cargo to or from the ships into warehouses or railway trucks close by. Formerly most of this work was done by hydraulic cranes running on rails on the quay8; in some of the more modern ports electric cranes have been found more convenient and more economical.
We have before us the excellent arrangement of electric cranes recently put up on the Manchester Ship Canal quays, specially made for handling.cotton bales and similar goods. Some of the most modern plants have been put. up at Middlesboro', Antwerp, Genoa, and other ports we could name.
The arrangements best suited to one port cannot be absolutely copied for another, each port has special requirements, but much can be learned by examining what has been successfully done elsewhere, and we should be glad to hear that the Egyptian Government was sending a competent engineer to the ports we have mentioned, with a view to adapting the best modern practice to our requirements.
Nowhere else in the world does one see such valuable quay space, either without any protection for merchandise or covered with building, using the ground space only. In all the other ports, warehouses of many stories are built within reach of cranes from the ships. It may be said that the foundations near our quays are very bad, but modern engineering has made such improvements in this direction, that it offers no difficulty which cannot be readily dealt with.
The requirements of the Custom House and local trade demand a large ground space close to the quays, but these spaces could be covered by warehouses of several stories standing on columns, so that the ground space I would be free under them. The cranes would I stand on a first floor platform, as at Manchester.
We do not hesitate to say that with such arrangements as we have outlined, the actual quays could easily deal with three times the amount of goods that can now be manipulated a on them.
An objection may be made with regard to the difficulty of mooring large pontoons between ships lying end on to the quays, on account of the swell in the inner harbour, such as may have been seen last week or at any | 1 time when there is a strong W. or N. W. wind. This swell might be prevented, and our harbour much improved for work durings many days of the year, by the construction of E a light breakwater, a few hundred yards from the fairway gas buoys north of the end of the Mole in the direction of the lighthouse. This breakwater would not be a very expensive undertaking, for it would be in shallow water, a mostly on a sand bank, and it would not be tried by any high sea.
It appears more than probable that the permanent increase both in imports and exports will not allow of much improvement in the present congested state of our quays, until some considerable work is carried out, and if this work can be done as we believe, more rapidly, on the lines we have indicated, than in any other way, we think it is well worthy of examination by the Government, the Municipality, the commercial community, and all who are interested in the future welfare of Alexandria, for we may be sure that if improvements are not made here they will be made elsewhere, in a way which will not be to the F advantage of our city
We do not hold ourselves rosponsible for the opinions expressed
by our correspondients, but we wish, in a spirit of fair play to all, to permit - within certain necessary limita - free discussita
THE LATE YOUSBASHI ARMSTRONG.
e
TO THE EDITOR OF THE EGYPTIAN GAZETTE.
Sir, -The letter of an "Englishwoman" supplies the comic element in a rather sad affair. She suggests as a remedy the establishment of a British Cottage Hospital. Does she mean a Cottage Hospital for the treatment of smallpox, or a Cottage Hospital for all diseases, including scarlet fever, smallpox, etc.? In the latter case the “Cottage" would have to be large. I think there must be a mistake. The “Englishwoman "must really be an "Irishwoman," for the Irish heart is always more conspicuous than
the head. One is reminded that Lord Beacons"field, instead of arguing with a woman who
made some particularly fatuvus remarks, merely said, "Oh you darling!"
I am, etc.,

To the EDITOR OF THE EGYPTIAN GAZETTE.
Sir, -I venture to ask you to allow me to a supplement your notice of the statement of ac
counts of the above society for 1902/3. You call specialattention to the smallness of the subscriptions in the former year, but to the amount of IP.T. 505 has to be added another item in the
accounts, viz., P.T. 1,487, the proceeds of a 3 concert, which amount was in reality & sub
scription to the society ; consequently the society received in 1902 & total sum of P.T.
1992 in voluntary subscriptions. ti For the absence of subscriptions in 1903
(not 1904, as you mention) I am entirely responsible, as I saw that the society had funds in hand sufficient to carry on the work for that year, and was wishful not to divert money, which was for the moment much needed, from other local philanthropic societies ;
consequently I asked for no subscription that - year.
I ask for the insertion of these few lines, as I think that your comments, quite unintentionally, might be read as a reflection on a community which, in no sense a rich one, has for many years liberally supported its branch of the S.P.C.A.
I am, etc.,
We insert the above letter with great | pleasure. If the funds are sufficient for the proper carrying on of the society's work in Suez, well and good, but cruelty to animals is so common, and requires such close watching
that great vigilance is necessary in order, as | far as possible, to put a stop to it, and this entails expense. Ed. E. G.]
