That the progress of the war between Russia and Japan is being followed with
the keenest interest by all educated Egyptians, is a fact evident to all,
and nothing can be more natural than that their sympathies should be wholly
with the sturdy little Japs, for Russia has always been regarded by Mosleins
every where is an inveterate foe, not only of the Ottoman power, but of
Islam. Nor does the fact that some fow Moslems have been permitted to rise
to high military and other rank under the rule of the Tsar in the least
modify this view, for it is noto-
Private letters from India tell us that the interest taken there in the war and the intense sympathy for the Japanese bave awakened uneasy feelings among those who believe that India is held by the sword and by the sword only Needless to say that those who know the people better know how far from the truth is such an interpretation of their feelings. But whatever views individuals, wiether Europesesor Basterns, may take of this subject, it is extreme ly desirable that Easterns everywhere should ask themselves the question - How is it that the Japanese have in such a short time raised themselves from the position and condition of oue of the least of the nations to be one of the Powers! The answer to that question is not difficult to find. It lies, in fact, on the very sur face of the history of the war. Great as have been the achievements of the Japanese, there is no mystery or magie about them. They have been the result of forces with which the world is familiar, the forces that made the Roman Empire great, that led Greeks to victory; that have built up the might of the great European Powers - unity of sim and devotion to duty. These are to-day, as they
have ever been, the forces that make a nation or a people invulnerable and if the East has everywhere been brought under the dominiou of the West it is because the peoples of the East have never possessed these foroes. Mere military might can accomplish but little. It may build up, but by itself it cannot maintain, a great empire. That is why the history of so maay of the empires of the past has been almost as brief as brilliant. And we have yet to learn whether the upward rush of the Japanese is anything more than theirs bas been, though it must be admitted that almost all we have learned of them of late would tend to show that they are indeed in possession of the true empire making forces. For the moment, at all events, they undoubtedly have these forces in & high degree, but whether they have them in a degree that will stand the strain of a great triumph or of a great disaster, is a ques tion yet to be solved.
Unfortunately for the rest of the East, nothing can be more certain than the utter absence of both the forces named from among their peoples. Throughout all these every man is for huselt. In India alone there are indeed a few who have shown a higher con ception of what a man's duty to his follows is. Elsewhere, creeds, clans, and countries do, it is true, exhibit a certain amount of unity and united action among sections of the Easterns, but it is a unity born rather of hostility to those outside than of amity to those within it, and therefore a unity that in the end is destructive and not constructive, the unity of a bundle of sticks, not the cohesion of a solid mass. If the Easterns then, and more especially the Bgyptians, would profit from the example of the Japanese, they must begin by enlarging their views of life, by realising that every utan has a duty to his neighbours as well as to himself, and that the getting of bread and butter is not the whole of sole object of lite. It is not the want of ability that las been or is the curse of the Eastern peoples, but the want of the will to apply and use the ability they have, as it ought to be used. Un less and until they can do this, they will never besither beneficial or dangerous to the peoples who can.

The "Sevastopol" has been successfully torpedoed ten times. She is now aground and evidently completely disabled.
General Stoessel opened negotiations with a view to protecting the hospitals from the bombardment. He furnished to the Japanese a map of the bospital positions. General Nogi replied accepting the map, but pointing out that, owing to the invisibility of the garrison, and the deviation of the Japanese guns, it was impossible to guarantee that the shells would reach the spot on which they were directed. The bearer of General Stoessel's letter asked the Japanese not to bombard the whole of the new town and the north-eastern part of the old town, but the Japanese refused to limit the ares

A Russian despateb bearer says that the Russian losses on 293-metre bill were under 2,000.
He gives a graphie account regarding the capture of 203-metre bill. The Japanese as saulted the place three times. The whole side of the hill was covered with corpses, and the trenches were rivulets of blood. The Japanese lighted huge wood and coal fires, and the wind drove the smoke and flames into the faces of the Russians, who were forced to retreat. The glare of the conflagration disclosed a ghastly scene of horror.

While a native, in company with a friend, was watching his plantation last night, he was shot by some person unknown. The bullet struck the liver, and the man died six hours afterwards. He was able to say that he did not see anyone approaching him, and would therefore have been unable to recognise the murderer. His friend made the same statement on giving notice to the police, which he did at onos. Next day, the Mamour of the Naiba, socompanied by the moswen and the Laxor sanitary doctor, examined the body and found that the bullet entered under the shoulder, proving that the man bad his arms over his hend and was probably carrying some load at the time he was shot. A quantity of maize was found near a shadoof close by, which appeared to bave been taken from a neighbouring property. The way in which this had been out showed that the thief was acquainted with the place. The owners of the stolen property denied all knowledge of the matter and the deceased's friend stated that if they were concerned in the murder he would at once be able to identify them. The affair is still under investigation by the authorities

Judge Royle had at his table Miss Royle, Mr. Royall Tyler, Major and Mrs. Spong, Capt. Maclean, Judge and Mrs. Dilberoglue, Mr. and Mrs. Diamont. At Tueny Bey's table, we noticed Prince Djemil Pasha Toussoun and lazat Pasha. Mr. Stone had a party of four and Mr. and Mrs. Palmera party of five. Mr. and Mrs. Robert Mond entertained Dr. and Mrs. Kestinge, Lady Rogers, Hon. and Mrs. Davey, Mr. York and Mr. Maundsley: Capt. Arbuthnot, of the Berkshires, bad a party of four.

Dancing was engaged in up to the usual hour, and many suppers were served in the restaurant after the dance. All the improvements carried out in the hotel during the summer, especially the enlargement of the restaurant and the hall, the fine Arabesque drawing room, and the new billiard-room and bar, were much admired.

THE EDITOR OF THE EGYPTIAN GAZETTE. Sir,-In reply to the eminently reasonable communications of your correspondents "Com- mon-sense" and "An Anxious Enquirer," let me state (1) that the infection of small-pox is carried by the air; (2) that, though every possible precaution was taken to avoid it, Mr. Armstrong was infected by the air; (3) that there was no communication whatever between the attendants of Mr. Armstrong and the attendants of the British sailor who was sub- sequently brought to hospital suffering from small-pox; (4) that all the attendants were Europeans.
I may be permitted to add that the matron of the Deaconesses' Hospital is a devoted, capable, and extremely intelligent woman, who inspires and guides all the other sisters of the institution.
I do not reply to an "Englishwoman," for the tone of her letter was disagreeable and in doubtful taste.
I am, etc.,
To THE EDITOR OF THE EGYPTIAN GAZETTE. Sir,-The national pride of Greeks should justly be flattered at the recent vote of the Convocation of Cambridge University, under which the Greek language is to continue to be compulsory for the 'Little-go' preliminary examination and a sine quá non to the obtain- ment of academical degrees. The proposal to dispense with classical Greek as an obligatory subject was mainly based on utilitarian grounds, and the ensuing discussion, which resulted in the motion being negatived, was distinctly characterised by considerations of expediency rather than of sentiment. The Convocation was asked to weigh and deter- mine whether the advantages accruing to the student of Greek fully made up for the loss of considerable and valuable time which could be otherwise employed in the acquirement of modern languages and subjects of practical every day utility. The reply was unequivocal; and Greeks may well be grateful to the Eng- lish University for having so signally asserted the virtues of their language as a means of attaining intellectual culture and political efficiency-for it must not be forgotten that the University of Cambridge has been the cradle of some of England's most glorious statesmen.
That Greece owes her very national existence to her fine language is beyond doubt; through- out ages her classical culture has tempered the hardships of her national misfortunes, and offered to the world the sight of the triumph of thought over matter, and intellect over brute force. Greece, conquered by Rome, not only retained her own political entity but had the satisfaction of tutoring the conqueror in his intellectual and political developments. Greece, devastated by barbarous hordes and subsequently wiped off the map by the Ottomans, lived and flourished in a latent state until she finally leaped again into national existence. Down to recent years, while succumbing in the war against Turkey, she not only comes out of it scatheless, but obtains the freedom of Crete.
Centuries of Turkish oppression and misrule have blanted the moral sense of the Greek people and engrafted on them pernicious instincts, the remnants of which must be extirpated before the national character can be re-established. It can only be achieved by greater attention being paid to the moral training of their children both at an early age and during their school tuition. Let her leaders see to it, and Greece will soon have responded to the fine compliment just paid to her by the English people and reconquered sympathies she had forfeited in some quarters. I am, Sir, Your obedient servant, D. G. CUPPA.
TO THE EDITOR OF THE EGYPTIAN GAZETTE.
Sir, In the issues of La Réforme and Le Phare Alexandrie of the 21st September last, there appeared under the headings of "Concur- rence Impossible," and "Allen, Alderson and Co." respectively statements to the effect that a steam thrashing machine competition had taken place at Evora, Portugal, in which Ruston, Proctor & Co., Lincoln, and other firms took part. It was further stated that the firms Clay- ton & Shuttleworth and Marshall, Sons, & Co. entered for the competition, but afterwards withdrew, the extraordinary suggestion being put forward that this was due to their joint recognition of the superiority of the Ruston machine.
Believing it to be extremely improbable that the facts were as stated, we communicated Messrs. Clayton & Shuttleworth, for om we act as agents in Egypt, and are now receipt of their reply.
We learn that Messrs. Clayton & Shuttle- worth absolutely declined to take part in the trial in question, their sole reason being pres- sure of work in all departments, consequent upon an unprecedented demand for their manufactures, which prevented them getting a set of machinery ready in time for competition. The report referred to is, therefore, untrue and misleading, and is calculated to inflict a gross injustice on Messrs. Clayton & Shuttle- worth, who are the oldest manufacturers in the trade. Their machinery is second to none, and has a deserved and world-wide reputation; and we feel confident that it is only necessary for us to give you this evidence of the inaccu- racy of the report complained of to ensure your obliging publication of our correction. Yours faithfully,

CURED OF ADVANCED DISEASE BY DR. WILLIAMS' PINK PILLS.
Kidney Disease, when it reaches the point of causing sudden collapse, as in the case of Mr. Mark Young, landlord of the Victoria Hotel, Victoria-street, Southwick, Sunderland, is nothing more or less than poisoning of the blood. The overworked Kidneys fail to clear the blood, and the blood becomes impure.
Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People have the power of clearing out the poison by making new blood. Mr. Young's case is a good example. "I used to suffer from disease of the Kidneys," he stated, "and I was afraid I should never get well again. Shivering fits were among the symptoms. These used to come on so suddenly and unexpectedly that I was often attacked when out and would have to be taken home in a cab, and put to bed in hot blankets to keep me warm. I sufferred terribly at times in a way which all those who have suffered from their Kidneys will understand. I was nearly doubled up with the pain. I slept badly every night, and had to exercise great care in my food. My illness was not aggravated by beer or spirits, as you might think, for although a publican, I am a strict teetotaller. I had been under the care of a doctor for a long time, when I happened to read in a newspaper of a cure by Dr. Williams' Pink Pills for Pale People, and I immediately decided to try whether they would have any effect on me. They have undoubtedly cured me.
"Before I had been taking them for a month I felt a great deal better. My appetite had improved, the pains had disappeared, and in other respects I was quite a changed man. I persevered with the pills, and in a very short time I was quite well again. My friends were greatly astonished at my recovery. I am so strong now that I can walk twenty miles with- out feeling the least tired. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are really a wonderful medicine, and I can honestly recommend them to all sufferers." Dr. Williams' Medicine Company have per- mission to refer to persons in all parts of the United Kingdom who have been cured, not only of Kidney Disease, but of all the following ailments: Paralysis, Locomotor Ataxy, Rheu- matism, and Sciatica; all diseases arising from Impoverishment of the blood, Scrofula, Rickets, Chronic Erysipelas, Consumption of the Bowels and Lungs, Anemia, Pale and Sallow Complexion, General Muscular Weak- ness, Loss of Appetite, Palpitations, Pains in the Back, Nervous Headache, Neuralgia, Early Decay, Ladies' Weaknesses, and Hys-
teria.

H.M.S. "Rinaldo," screw sloop (Commander Drury St. A. Wake), arrived at Port Said on Friday homeward bound from the China sta- tion. She left on Saturday afternoon for England via Malta.
The Italian warship "Aretusa" arrived at Port Said on Saturday bound for the Red Sea station. Count Sinni, the Italian Consul, entertained the captain and officers to dinner at the Eastern Exchange Hotel.
The Director of the Sudan Government Railways has issued a dainty illustrated guide furnishing full information as to the through tourist service to the region of the Blue Nile, The journey from Assouan to Halfa will be per- formed by Messrs. Cook and Sons', the Anglo- American, and the Sudau Government steamers, and by railway from Halfa and Khartoum, There will be three through services weekly. Owing to the increasing number of passengers visiting the Second Cataract, the Anglo- American Line has placed one of its best steamers over the cataract at Assouan to perform a weekly run to Halfa and back, this service opening on the 21st inst. The hand- book supplies a useful itinerary of the times of arrival at and departure from the different places, besides giving full particulars as to fares, hotel accommodation, and scales of diet- ary at the various points on the routes. The trains de luxe, accompanied by through con- ductors, are composed of carriages provided with electric light and comfortable sleeping and dining arrangements. There is also to be a monthly service of Government steamers up the White Nile, the whole organisation for the convenience of travellers showing that the Sudan Government Railway authorities are determined to utilise their lines for the deve- lopment of passenger traffic in a region which must prove attractive to the tourist.
